Permission problems in WP10 in Documents Folder

I am just starting to use Win7 for my main OS after 11 years in XP (I am also evaluating Win10). My main obstacle was a good Mail Program, which I have now found and just plain procrastination. I have 5 years experience using Win7.
    But...
I am having a problem with permissions with Wordperfect 10. I know it's 10 years old but I need it for legacy reasons. I also have Open Office.
For some reason I can't open a previously created file in the %user%\Documents folder without being told it has to be opened in read-only mode because it is marked as RO or is in use, both of which are untrue.
I also can't save a new document in that folder because it says I don't have permission but "would I like to save it one level above in my %user% folder.
I have "taken ownership" of the Document Folder to no avail.

I have used the instructions from this website to run SFC several times with a few minor resulting errors which, on review, do not "seem" to address my issues, however I could be wrong.

I can save files created with Open Office Write in that folder so it may just be something to do with WP10. Like I said, it is old, predating Win7.

I am running the program with Windows XP SP3 compatibility and as administrator.

And as a final thought I created a new folder under the root of C: and WP10 is happy as a clam working with documents there, both new and old.

It's a head scratcher. what doesn't it like about my \%user%\Documents folder?

What about installing Oracle VirtualBox, setting up a XP client then run it under that? You can setup Documents on the host to be read/write to the XP guest in the VM.
