Windows hangs when in blank screen mode

It doesn't happen very often, but once in a while it does.

Funny is that my Windows gets into blank screen mode several times in the day and it is just to touch any keyboard key or move the mouse that it gets back. However sometimes for no one noticeable reason it simply doesn't get back and I have to hit the reset button.

Would like to know if this is a known issue?

Not an issue.

My computer screen will blank after several minutes without any input.

It could not get back to windows screen, as it can be 'sleep' and other modes, hence this require to press the button.
Depend on the setting.

I am using laptop.

Go to Control Panel --> Hardware & Sound --> Power Options.

From here, you can select and change setting, as you prefer.

For PC, mostly is about Screen to such as; turn of display xx minutes.

Hmmmm, I don't think so. I can't see what the waiting time in minutes to start the screen saver has to do with computer hanging.

If I understand you right (and please correct me if I am wrong), the computer is not activating the screen saver, but the monitor is shutting off (because the computer is telling it to). When it does this, sometimes you can't bring it back out of its sort of sleep mode.

It could be that the computer has actually gone to sleep in those cases. Some desktops require you to press the space bar to bring the computer out of sleep. You could also check your BIOS to see if there is a "Wake on USB" (or equivalent) setting in the BIOS that needs to be activated.

Please try those things and post back the results.

I longed a little while to answer because I wanted to watch the computer behavior, and as I said, it doesn't happen ALL the time (just once in a while). Yes, you are correct in your assumption. That's exactly what it does (shut monitor off and sometimes I cannot bring it back from its nap).

I checked the BIOS and everything seems to be fine. However, I set the BIOS to turn computer with the stroke of any keyboard key (before it only could be turned by the case button). Since then the problem never happened again.

HOWEVER in this period since I opened this thread I had my computer to completely frozen twice. The screen just froze and got completely stuck - even the mouse pointer - forcing me to perform a cold reboot with the reset button. It has frozen before, although not very often.

Now I am thinking that perhaps all the other times when my computer refused to wake up could be that it froze and that I just didn't notice because the screen was blank...



The only thing that I have noticed along this time is that as far as I can remember it always got stuck after some time of inactivity. I can't remember of it freeze while I was using it what is very weird...

Not being an expert (but a looooong time computer user) I believe that it may be caused by some kind of issue in memory, cpu or mobo (or a combination of them). The hardest part is that mostly of diagnostics programs doesn't do a good job on finding the problem, unless it is screaming. For instances, unless that your memory stick is really seriously screwed it will say that no issue was found.



Anyway, my computer is a two and a half regular PC (i5 3330 3 GHz, Gigabyte MB, 8GB RAM being a Kingston and a Corsair Vengeance stick 4GB each), no overclock, two internal HDs, two internal SSDs and three USB HDs. Everything is onboard, unless by the audio card that is an USB external one and the only extra card I have is an USB that I installed recently to get more ports. I know that those peripherals aren't the cause because the eventual freezes happens since I can remember and before I install them. My OS is a crossbones W7 pro 64.

I am not a gamer but I usually push my computer to the limit. I keep always 10+ tabs of browser opened, along with Photoshop with heavy images, Corel Draw, etc. Normally I listen to music and watch videos too at the same time, and do some eventual video and music recording/editing. Funny is that the freezes usually happens when the computer is swell.
