Well John; I believe my choice of setting would solve tibbar problem with the desktops screen dimming.
It also doesn't cost anything to give it a try.
Time for me to eat humble pie
It took me a long ime to understand. I get it now a balanced plan with all options set to "Never". Must have had a power cut to my brain. I do most humbly apologise to you and TechnoMage.

This is the option I have for the Display settings. While the screen does go off and turn on with keyboard or mouse interaction because of the timer. If the dimming starts the only thing that can fix it is a reboot. The biggest problem I am having right now is getting it to replicate reliably. Every time we set up a test machine it doesn't happen and there hasn't been a pattern of usage or programs that make it occur.

The funny thing is if I remote assist into the machines with Bomgar I get to see the desktop without the dimming. I has me scratching my head as I have never seen a desktop act this way.

You say when you set up a Test Machine, it does not happen. Does it happen on all machines or is it an isolated problem?

I have not been able to find a rhyme or reason as to when it will start the fading. They all are the same hardware with the same image pushed to them. Some it doesn't happen at all, some very infrequently, some more so. But when we set a box up to watch it nothing happens. And the end users don't have the time to call us and lets us poke around so they just reboot without letting us know now. I have implemented a nightly reboot to all the machines now so I hope that will mitigate things. Still is bugging me though.

Find one that ts doesn't happen to and one that it does. Switch the video cards, see if the problem switches also.

I think the Dell OptiPlex 3040 comes with Intel integrated graphics!
    Tibbar
When you said in your initial post "My company just did a refresh of our desktops and has rolled out Dell OptiPlex 3040s" does that mean that they were all new machines adn were all the same configurations?

Correct they are integrated graphics so there isn't a card to swap and the form factor is very tiny without the ability to add a discrete GPU. And yes every computer has been swapped out with the same desktop and the same image was pushed to every machine.

Then no doubt the machines are under warranty so I would suggest your company should contact the supplier. It just might be a glitch in the hardware itself.
Are you using the VGA or DVI connections? Might be worth swapping them round!

We are working with Dell but as our test machines are not replicating it once we start watching them we have yet to give them good data. I hoping that others might have had a similar issue and were able to fix it. It is the problem of working on intermittent errors.
