W7 Stability - Is it just me?

    Hi
Having installed W7 on Both my desktop and laptop, I am left feeling, well to be honest, a little robbed.
    I:
    * Setup a Homegroup (V easy), initally no problems, then both PCs systematically hang. Requires a hard reset to get up and running again. No warning, no 'windows is trying to find a solution' dialog
    * Installed logmein, and upon remote connection, desktop network card is disconnected. Very repeatable. Not useable at all. It does offer a windows diagnostic fix, which DOES work (adapter always requires resetting)
    * Shared a harddrive on my desktop to get around the Homegroup issue. Initally worked ok (very slow transfer rate oddly), now, loses connection, and hangs the laptop. No warning, no 'windows is trying to find a solution' dialog
    * Installed uTorrent, configured correctly (port forwarding etc). Continuously hangs explorer (although the network processes still 'seem' to continue in the background), requires hard reset. Cannot use. No warning, no 'windows is trying to find a solution' dialog

Now I understand this is a new OS release, and bugs have to still be ironed out, but this is ridiculous! The product is certainly not reliably useable
The problems certainly seem to be network related.

I am desperate to finds ways to turn off the offending areas, but having searched around here, cannot find anything. Is this IPv6 related? CAn I simply turn this off? Will it work? Some have mentioned ditching the Homegroup in favour of workgroup. How? Also saw some info about ensuring IPv6 is configured in my router. Cant find any reference to this in the Admin screens unfortunately.

Do Microsoft know of these issues? Do they have a resolution path?
Might be just me, not sure. Anyone else see these issues?

    Hi and welcome

TGH it looks like all of your connectivity ussues may be caused by homegroup. Hpmegroup uses IPv6 which causes random drops, slow dl, connectivity issues etc. Uf you change to the IPv4 used in workgroup you might find most of them go away

Let us know if you need help

I cannot speak for the many others that will come and comment, but I can say I had few problems with Vista and now for nearly a month I have had none with W7. Not having any of the problems that you are, I would find it difficult to offer a solution. I can say however, if you installed via the upgrade route that might be the problem. If you did go that route and you can not find a better solution. A clean reinstallation, probably is the way to go.

Sounds like it is your network card's drivers that are the cause since everything you mentioned involves the network in some way.

First - leave the homegroup and configure a proper workgroup. Create identical users on both computers; doing this means you don't have to turn off password protected sharing (IMHO, turning off password protected sharing and then adding the "everyone" group to sharing options is ridiculous). There are plenty of guides on how to do that (a few of my more recent posts in this forum have links), if you have never configured a workgroup before.

Second - have you checked with the logmein community for Windows 7 problems?

Third - see my first suggestion.

Fourth - have you checked with the uTorrent community for Windows 7 problems?

Fifth - where did you get your drivers for your hardware, specifically the motherboard and network card? If you let Windows install them, you might want to check the manufacturer websites for updated Windows 7 drivers. If you installed them, you might want to remove the hardware (deleting the driver files, if given that option), then rebooting and letting Windows find drivers.

I have had no problem with Windows 7 regarding networking or wireless networking.

In fact, I haven't had any problem with anything when I run Windows 7.

Blaming the OS when the problem isn't with the OS is unfair, to say the least.

I have one PC (my main one) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit and one PC (my business one) running Windows XP 64 Pro. I've had no issues sharing files and folders between the two systems, they both see each other fine.

One computer is a completely vanilla install (ie no additional 3rd party patches, drivers etc adding - I entrusted W7 with the entire process), and yes, a Vista upgrade (desktop).
The laptop is an Acer W7 upgrade offer (Acer Preprep disk, W7 install followed by a post install process)

I value all comments, as like you, understand the nuances of SW delivery, but for me, who really looked forward to a fantastically new, vibrant, reliable, optimised OS, with a seamless home network, am REALLY happy with the new product, apart from the networking aspect, which result in numerous hard reboots daily-if I push these features

I will of course now step into the technical booth, and attempt to fight my way through this problem with the suggestions from this site. The original post was admittedly a cry for help, tinged with a little irritation, so apologies if it came across as a direct attack on the product as a whole-not my intention. It is, in my eyes, a good product, with some network flaws.
    Thanks for the support

At my home, we have four computers.

The main computer that's directly connected to the router is my desktop, running Windows 7.

I also have an old desktop running XP, and a netbook running XP. My wife has a laptop running Vista.

All four computers are connected via wireless network, and it's flawless. We also have a wireless network printer (Epson Workforce 600), and it works fine too.

So the moral of the story is that it is possible to sort through the connection issues, but it does take time and it can be frustrating at times.

    Good luck to you.

I've had Win 7 x64 stability problems also. I've never gotten so far as to even look at the features you've mentioned, my installation won't stay running long enough. I say that, but I only installed it yesterday. But to this point I haven't been able to keep it going long enough to install ASUS MOBO drivers they published for 64 bit systems.
