Hello. Recently, I wanted to identify a .CHK file. I knew it was a video file so I tried to open it with VLC player. However, I accidentally chose to "always use this program to open these files".
How can I undo this? Will this cause problems?
I just tried to scan another flash drive for errors and the process froze. I had to restart windows explorer, then when I retried the scan it said that it was unable to fix the errors.
Could this have something to do with the aforementioned situation?

Your choice causing problems? Maybe not; Although similar, a .chk file is different than a CHKDSK.
In the first case you wanted to open a file with VLC Player, the second, you were trying to use CHKDSK to scan for errors.
How are you trying to run the chkdsk on the flash drive? Make sure the drive is in its usual slot and open disk management, see option one in the CHKDSK tutorial link, then in step two right-click on the flash drive you want to check. follow the rest of the tutorial, and make sure the flash drive isn't active or somehow in use .
The bad news? The scan process froze because the flash drive is already corrupted.But, it might have a dirty bit set. Go to the beginning of the Raymond blog link below and check for a "dirty bit" on that flash drive.

- I'm usually mindful of the "Always use selected program" box but in this case, due to sleepiness, I neglected to uncheck it.
What I want to know is if there is any way to change the .CHK files from being associated with VLC player? I went into the Default Programs list but I there is no "restore to default" option and I don't know what the default program even was. I think it MAY have originally said 'unknown application".
- I ran the chkdsk by right clicking on the flash drive and selecting properties then selecting tools. This is the method I have always used and have never had any problems.
I just thought it was odd that I had a problem with chkdsk right after I mistakenly associated the .CHK files with VLC player.
If the chkdsk scan does encounter errors, does it not generate .CHK files? If it then attempts to fix these errors does it not have to work with these .CHK files? If so, will the .CHK files association with VLC create problems?

You're welcome; I'll answer your questions in the order you've placed them....
I know about the human condition known as sleepiness. I had heart surgery back in March and all my rhythms are out of wack, so don't be too hard on yourself.
That's what it says"unknown application" because there's too many programs to list, system files are usually well protected and there should be little or no concern of VLC being permanently associated with your chk file; Any of the 7 Raymond tools should be able to tell you what type of file the chk file is, don't miss the vb5 requirements, if, you use them.
Though an easier way is to right click on the file then properties, look at the location line on the General tab it should give a hint where the file is, if the line looks cut-off or truncated just left-click-hold and wipe to the right to see the rest of the location.
That's how I was hoping you ran the chkdsk, if you continue to have problems, try an elevated SFC /scannow or boot into advanced boot options and pick "last known good configuration (advanced)" then finish the boot.
Yes it does, but within itself to work with the existing chk files, and these are cleared when chkdsk finishes. Actually any program can generate a .chk file it is how the operating system was designed to police itself, and chkdsk will work with the existing chk files to understand and reset the chk so it disappears. If there are still problems, you will see it/them in the end report.
There might be a hiccup with the VLC association, but honestly I would believe your system ignored it (the association).

What happens when you go back to open the chk file that started this?
If VLC does appear by itself with the "always use" box checked, uncheck the box and click OK, that should release the association if it's there.
Even if the "open with" is populated with other programs pick VLC and uncheck the always box, again that should release the chk from VLC.
In both instances the system will try opening the chk file with VLC, but, release after the try.
I did a system restore and the default program association for .CHK files was restored.
