Wireless card Vostro 1720 Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN

    moderate
    We're in hospital, she's I'll, I am 24/7 carer.

My Vostro 1720 connects promptly at home, WiFi or LAN.

Hospital has public use WiFi provided on each floor. Transmitter has TP-Link on the cover and twin aerials.

The Vostro can see transmitters for 4 floors, the signals come & go and, regularly disappear.

2 iPads & an iPhone stay connected unless, the signal disappears, in the same room. Signals are described as excellent or good.

The Vostro when I bring it in, after using at home, connects automatically. Twice has reached the stage when all 3 links I can see with a decent signal, can't connect, sometimes get asked for the password, run trouble shooter multiple times with no success. First time internet connection worked for 2 days, 2nd time for an hour, then couldn't log on to any link.

I'm puzzled why the Vostro doesn't hold the connection and the IOS devices do.

Public holiday over in a couple of days and I plan to catch the lady chief of the hospital and the IT manager.

I would be most grateful for queries, comments or, references to help in these encounters.

    Thank you and regards

    Hi Mda,
no surprise that the other 2 work, there piggybacking on the "telephone" connection.

I suspect your comp is getting confused, which of the 4 signals shall i use???.

you need to set up the 4 connections under manage wireless networks, with the associated passwords, if required
BUT make sure they are NOT setup to connect automatically when in range, apart from home.
    Id set them up
    1) home
    2) hospital master (the passworded connection)
    3) most common working place floor
    4) others.

To make switching easier, when you have the wireless network manager open >> minimize it >> right click >> pin to task bar.

Thank you. I followed the advice and I got a couple of connections for a short time.

Grumbled at the lady chief, grumbled at IT manager, grumbled at nurses and grumbled at reception, several times, encouraged my very polite American colleague next door but one to likewise and... , IT manager went off to the computer shop to buy a new bit. Connected at 04:30 and worked for about 4 hours, then back to seeing networks to connect to and no follow through to connection.

THEN she got discharged. Returned home where network only has to be rebooted daily to become a forgotten part of the system as it works reliably.

From Dell Forum this link filled me with information...

    Intel® WiFi Link 5100

Many thanks for the answers, particularly the Intel site which shows the network card can be 'tuned' like the rest of the laptop. I'll get to that soon.

    Thank you and regards
ps where is the cleaning/cooking/shopping robot??
