all shortcut icons disappear

    Does that include C:\Users\(user name)\Desktop

    oooh,
    If desktop is personal then restore should not remove the desktop shortcut
    in the example below.

    1) create restore point.
    2) create a new file in desktop and make a new shortcut (lnk) in desktop.
    3) restore step 1
    4) the new shortcut in desktop is gone.
    but the new file is not.

    Yep, it's not suppose to, but that's why I would always recommend to back up anything that you don't want to lose to be safe.
