Very odd Checkdisk / SFC scannow / Windows Update Issue

    Hey all,

I was given a friend's laptop to try and repair - running Win7 Home 64-bit. Trying to update it to the latest Windows Updates as it hasn't been done since Dec. 2015 successfully. Ever since the, it fails. Windows Updates fail because of the error code (forget it now, will update with it later) that states the Windows Update icon is hidden, but it;s not hidden and not even LISTED in the 'Customize System Tray Icons' menu...

Checkdisk asks to run on startup, but fails due to a certain update being installed, but doesn't list the update, and I can't run SFC /scannow as it mentions there is a system repair that requires a reboot every time.......but no number of reboots ever seems to fix it to let me run scannow?

Cheers for any help and thanks!

Is it at sp1? At start goto the cmd prompt by pressing f8 and run chkdsk c: /f from there

Tried something a minute ago that seemed tol let Checkdisk run on boot last try, so trying Windows Update again as we speak, will let you know.

Yes, it is Service Pack 1.

sfc /scannow still gives the "restart required due to a system repair" thing though.
