YUP, YAY YAY YAY. It was on the 16 bit window tho, so maybe the shortcut arrow overlay icon thing will help further. I did not change it but its missing on the icons soooo... maybe is one more step. See Ya tom, Jim

Edit: My bad. The overlay icons are still there. Most icon arrows are within the folders, which are not visible from the shot, except for a,few. See shot.

Uhh, did have a thought tho, as to events in or around the time problems started. I was attempting to view a file shot taken with my LG LP769 cell phone. When connecting the LG with usb cable to my PC, a LG initiated driver search occurred which also turned into a "LGPCSuite_Setup.exe" program installation. My mind at that time was focused on the cell file transfer so I did not notice any desktop icons problem but do recall seeing a separate LG download I made on my own with no visible desktop icon problem (from my memory anyway). Cannot say if that change to desktop became apparent on next later reboot about 9 am or not but might have since as I recall quite some time passed before I rebooted. That's the sole change I can think of right now, until 10:30 am when I installed "Ultimate Windows Tweaker.exe" to try fixing the desktop icon problem. FYI, I have uninstalled all LG programs. Jim

    Jim,

While still using 16-bit color, clear and reset your icon cache and thumbnail cache. Afterwards, change to 32-bit color to see if the icons may come back.

Did as instructed and checked path.Back to shot #1 (just icon name-letters)
Looks like the icons exist for sure, but just won't show, in decent 32 bit true color. Hmmm

I must admit that I'm not sure why they're not showing using 32-bit. You might try an older restore point.

OH oh... used my earliest restore point. had been housekeeping restore points with CCleaner tools, and that. could do the next to last restore point but ???. Can't do a custom bit like true 24 bit? Thinking out loud here. Jim

Edit: Just notices something. when I click on a name-letter icon area in 32 bit, the icons stored inside show up perfect. What'd up with that?

edit 2: in 32 bit when I copy a fully visible good icon or file located within a name-letter folder icon, then paste it to the desktop, that copy-pasted good icon/file turns into a name letter icon/file. Really weird but looks like we got it narrowed to the desktop outside of a folder-icon. OK Bubba, your turn!:)

Does refreshing (F5) the desktop help any?

    Some things to check:
    • Screen resolution set to "recommended" resolution.
    • Latest graphics driver installed.

F5 does nothing. advise pls. also did you see my edit 2 (last post)?

Edit1: WOW, the screen resolution is 1440 x 900 but the "recomended" is 1920 x 1080. should I change it now?

whats best procedure/tool etc to verify graphics drivers (besides windows itself, I mean)?

Yeah, I would try using the recommended screen resolution first to see if that may toggle them to work properly.

Did you install some 3rd party tweaking program that may have a setting to hide the desktop icons and leave only their text name?

Does it still do this while in Safe Mode?

resolution change not do it. but take a look at the perfect big Open office icon I set off to the left side for easy view. It is not diminished in a box frame like the others. Why do you think? How about windows photo viewer? See shot below. Jim
