    Right click open with does not expand to make a selection

    Trying to open .jpeg and .png file using 2 different programs (irfanview & mspaint). The right click, open with option has no selection (it's blank.) I'm probably not explaining myself very well so I'm going to try and attach a snapshot to explain. Thank you

    Get a copy of OpenWithView

    Run the program and in the window that appears check to see if any entry exists for a program that you have uninstalled. If such an entry exists - disable it by highlighting the line then clicking the red button.

    A reboot is needed for changes to take effect.

    If there is no invalid entry - post a screenshot of the window so that we can see if there are any known problem programs listed.

    I get the same results with no open with selection. I disabled groove.exe (have no idea what it is though!) Also didn't recognize anything I had uninstalled lately.

    PDF Xchange Viewer is known to cause problems but since you've disabled it - it cannot be the cause.

    Nothing else there looks dodgy. I take it that you did reboot to test?

    Anyway - if no difference undo the changes.

    I would ask that you export and upload these registry keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\IrfanView.jpg

    Just navigate to them in regedit and then right click to export.

    Thank you for responding Callender. Here are the registry keys you asked me to upload.

    Sorry - I'm a little tired at the moment. What I should have said is - enable only IrfanView & Paint items in your screenshot here:

    Then reboot and test right clicking an an miage file (jpg)

    I will look at your uploaded reg files now.

    The Irfanviw reg looks okay.

    The other reg file has an extra that's not shown in the MRU list.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\OpenWithList]
    "a"="i_view32.exe"
    "MRUList"="ajdhcgbie" - there's no "f" here
    "b"="PDFTools4.exe"
    "c"="WINWORD.EXE"
    "d"="DllHost.exe"
    "e"="Skype.exe"
    "f"="lxdufax.exe"
    "g"="mspaint.exe"
    "h"="PaintDotNet.exe"
    "i"="WLXPhotoGallery.exe"
    "j"="chrome.exe"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\OpenWithProgids]
    "jpegfile"=hex(0):
    "IrfanView.jpg"=hex(0):

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\UserChoice]
    "Progid"="IrfanView.JPG"
    Try deleting "f"="lxdufax.exe" and renaming "j"="chrome.exe" to "f"="chrome.exe" and change"MRUList"="ajdhcgbie" to "MRUList"="afdhcgbie"like this:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\OpenWithList]
    "a"="i_view32.exe"
    "MRUList"="afdhcgbie"
    "b"="PDFTools4.exe"
    "c"="WINWORD.EXE"
    "d"="DllHost.exe"
    "e"="Skype.exe"
    "f"="chrome.exe"
    "g"="mspaint.exe"
    "h"="PaintDotNet.exe"
    "i"="WLXPhotoGallery.exe"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\OpenWithProgids]
    "jpegfile"=hex(0):
    "IrfanView.jpg"=hex(0):

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\UserChoice]
    "Progid"="IrfanView.JPG"
    Then reboot.

    Just one other thing comes to mind. I notice that you have 64bit Irfanview. I also installed the 64bit version some time ago and problems were caused by 32bit Irfanview leftovers that were not removed when upgrading. I had to do a full removal of 32bit Irfanview including manually deleting leftovers in order to install a problem free 64bit Irfanview.

    Thank you Callender, Nothing changed after modifying registry, but I think I will uninstall Irfanview and reinstall to see if that might be a problem. I do appreciate all you have done so far. I have to report for work now but will re-post if I cannot get this resolved!
    Thank you again

    IrfanView is one of the first programs I install after I finish installing Windows.
    I've been using it for over a decade.

    I didn't have any major issues swapping from the 32 bit version to the 64 bit version.

    Is there a particular reason that you haven't set IrfanView (or MS Paint) as the default picture viewer?
