IrfanView is one of the first programs I install after I finish installing Windows.
I've been using it for over a decade.

I didn't have any issues swapping from the 32 bit version to the 64 bit version.
I remember that you did have problems. Same as I did with needing to fully remove the 32bit version.

New Irfanview now available in 64 bit version

Anyway I don't think that Irfanview causes the problem at hand. Thanks for any suggestions. :)

    Callender,
Thank you for your support. Due to the time difference, I did not see your responses (nor the response by lehnerus2000) until now beings I'm USA Eastern time zone. I have updated both PDF-XChange Editor & PDF-XChange Viewer and viola! all is back in the open with menu. Also, I too am an avid fan of Irfanview, have selected it as default and prefer it to any other image related software. My daughter tells me that Win8 is great - but I'm just not ready to give up on Win7. Again, many thanks to you and ALL of 7Forums, I always receive a response and what's better - a solution.

So a software update fixed it. Good news.

I must really be going senile.

That issue only affected multimedia playback, not viewing images (which is the main reason I use it.)

IrfanView did work, just differently to the way it was "supposed" to.
However that issue could probably be chalked up to PEBKAC.
I forgot that the 64 bit version wouldn't overwrite the 32 bit version.
I guess you can't have both the 32 bit and 64 bit internal players installed and fully functional at the same time.

OTOH, the issue might have been caused by the KB3102810 update.
