I think I also misunderstood the OP's post.
I (mistakenly?) thought that the "100$ ebay laptop" was a replacement for the one with the blown hardware.
I guess it's actually the system with the blown hardware, in which case, it's not all that surprising that the hardware has failed.

Sorry for the misunderstanding,

Windows 10 Pro. 64/ version 1709 Windows 7 Pro/64

What I was thinking.

1. The problem computer needs the data saved.
2. A laptop was bought from eBay.
3. With a caddy and and the hard drive from the problem computer hooked to the new Laptop via the caddy the data was going to be moved to the Laptop.

***If my understanding is correct, I'm suggesting that before attempting moving the data to the eBay Laptop, make sure the eBay laptop is in proper condition to receive the data.

As Ranger said, you can take the HDD from the laptop and install it on a USB case or on a desktop and transfer your data (hope you don't have encryption). And don't send your laptop to maintenance with the HDD. On this kind of situation they may look what you have or even change or format your HDD.
As it's a Laptop, everything is integrated on the MB. If Dell's warranty is over, I think it will be cheaper to by another one.

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

MiniTool Power Data Recovery, free version, can be usb or dvd booted and run [on a working computer with the problematic HD attached], will attempt recovery of 1GB data. Any more than that -- have to buy the license. Or, on a working computer, install MTPDR [and make the usb and/or dvd boot], attach the problematic HD and hope for the best.
