First suspects would be motherboard or power supply.

I don't think you'd likely see a totally black screen if you had a drive failure, so with any luck you haven't lost Windows or any data.

Do you see any lights or hear anything at all at close range when you attempt to power on? Do you see or hear any fans spin?

I'd guess this is a laptop at least 4 or 5 years old. Not sure how cost-effective it is to repair it at this stage in life. I see used examples for sale as low as $100. But you should be able to salvage your personal files unless the hard drive itself failed.

ignatzatsonic...THANK you for your reply ! Cannot see ANY lights and I hear NOTHING when I attempt to power You're guess is correct.I'd say it's about 4-6 yearsr old, actually ! I don't care about repairing it (Unless it's REALLY cheap) (I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude from ebay for a hundred bucks.I just REALLY need to salvage what was on that hard drive !!

You could buy a Hard Drive caddy, then remove the hard drive from the laptop, fit it in the caddy & connect it to a working computer via a USB cable & copy the files you need from it.

Of course this assumes the hard drive is still able to work.

Yikes. That deal -- especially from ebay -- sounds <ahem> too good to be true.
ebay is not known as a source for reliable, legitimate or high-quality computer stuff.
I hope you didn't fix one problem by possibly creating a new one.
I suggest keeping a robust paper trail of the transaction, for whatever that's worth.

First thing to check on this refurb will be whether you've got a genuine Windows install or not.

    Just a thought,

    I do agree with MoxieMomma.
A laptop from ebay for a $100.00 is iffy at best.

Before you run out of what ever time you have with your new purchase I recommend doing two things.

This free program will show lots of information about your laptop. Check and see if you got what you paid for.

Speccy - Free Download - Piriform

Then do this tutorial by Brink. If you post the log here someone will be able to let you know if you have a proper install of Windows 7.

You don't need to moving all your saved data to a problem laptop and have more head aches.

Jack, the problem is that the laptop will not work at all. That's why I suggested getting a caddy & mounting the laptops hard drive in it to try & recover the files the OP wants.
