Remember that the key found on your laptop sticker will only legally work on that laptop.
It is tied to laptop. With a clean install on a new drive installed internally in that laptop. The Windows sticker key should work to get a proper activation.

Instead of buying a HDD, buy a SSD.
You have no idea what a SSD can do for you.
Don't know how big it should be for your requirements.
