    Clean after install?

    Hi,

Ideally, how should one clean a drive of remnants of sfc scan etc, after clean install and updating, before creating the 1st backup using macrium reflect?

Without installing any 3rd party apps.

    Using cleanmgr?

    Thanks.

Yeah, Disk Cleanup is about all you have if you don't want to use third party applications.

There's a choice within it to include System Files. Say yes to that if you want.

I wouldn't attempt to clean the registry by hand.

But I would do a virus and malware scan before making a Macrium image--if at all possible. I'll admit I don't always do that.

You can do a verification on the Macrium image if you want, but that is not going to ensure a successful restoration.

Personally I make a Macrium Reflect Image or Clone before doing any cleaning after a new install and the Windows Updates. Just in case.
Then if everything goes okay after a couple of days, (cleaning and adding programs) I use Reflect again.

    Thanks.

The 1st image, would like to be only of W7 and Office, total stock.

Including System files, in Disk cleanup won't harm...correct?

    OR could use TFC cleaner?

I had the same confusion, to take 1st total stock, than tweak a bit like cleaning etc that would be my 2nd, than after 3rd party apps would be my 3rd....

    Thanks Layback.......

I'd do that sitting at Pearl harbor.

I've never regretted including system files.

TFC is third party as far as I know. It may be OK; I've never used it. About all I use is CCleaner, Disk Cleanup, and various malware on-demand scans. I have rarely used other third party disk cleaners, but I don't see any over-riding reason to use them unless you are really in a jam with no other way out and are just hoping they might help. But not as a routine cleaner.

I run sfc /scannow maybe once a month. Chkdsk on my spinning hard drives maybe once a year. I have not manually defragged a drive in 6 or 8 years.

    Thanks again.

I understand TFC is a small, but a 3rd party app.......for the 1st image wanted to know what windows own cleaning utilities are, which you mentioned disk cleanup including system files.

What measures do you normally take before creating a backup......like sfc scan, virus, malware scan, chkdsk /f /r etc?

The only thing I do before imaging is a standard run of CCleaner, excluding the registry cleaner, but I can understand why someone might do other stuff.

I run CCleaner habitually--pretty much every day, but I freely admit that's more out of habit than necessity--it helps to relieve my somewhat obsessive-compulsive nature.

I typically make images only once a month--immediately before getting the monthly "security only" single file update from Windows Update. There are rare occasional circumstances that I might make an image more often. My C partition doesn't undergo a lot of changes over time---I don't constantly change stuff and install/uninstall apps.

My anti-virus and anti-malware scanners are constantly running, and at any moment are no more than hours "out of date".

SFC /scannow is done randomly, once a month or so--rather than immediately before an image.

Disk Cleanup also randomly, maybe every couple of months.

Chkdsk randomly, maybe once a year, with no connection to imaging.

That's just me. Do what causes you to sleep better and not be a worry-wart.

I agree, with CCleaner, once I install it, run it each time before shutting down....true it's addictive, makes a habit and OBCN.

    Thanks for sharing.
