hi to All,
sir(s),
what has happened to the great services tweaking adviser site :
Black Viper's Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Service Configurations | Black Viper | www.blackviper.com
i tried different DNS servers both @ router and my pc , tried other ISPs but all in vain ! every time the result is quite same from last two weeks
what happened to Blackviper.com ?-capture.png
"Show saved copy" is not very fruitful. is there any way to inform him or could anybody take this intiative ? (my pc is working good but i intend to help myself and others on the topic !)

Thanks and Regards,
Vineet Garg.

[ EDIT : the site is functional again and now, the only source/destination to access the content!]

It appears to be down, possibly due to the site being maintained or maybe the site is closed due to the changes to operating systems since XP which meant that tweaks to system services were actually likely to degrade performance so were not needed on Vista, Windows 7, and were definitely superfluous on Windows 8 & 10.

It has gone down before so may come back up or not if the site is not making money enough to pay for the server time

The site was quite good for windows 7 !

hi Barman,
thanks for the quick reply, BUT...

"maybe the site is closed due to the changes to operating systems since XP which meant that tweaks to system services were actually likely to degrade performance so were not needed on Vista, Windows 7, and were definitely superfluous on Windows 8 & 10."

1. The site presents service configurations for each of the OSs in seperate sections as they differ. Even the services in same names differ in functions from one to the other. For eg. the 'RPC Locator' which was a help to 'RPC' in previous OSs is merely of compatability assistance in windows 7! and there are new exclusions /inclusions as well.
2. i don't know much about XP, Vista, 8 & 10 but it (site) seems quite useful in Windows 7. why should i have services/ features enabled which i am not using or plan to ? besides, there are many old laptops which want to run win 7, even older than me !
3. and even if it is of no use, it is good enough to go through, at least for the novice users like me , so many information at one spot !

Thanks and Regards,
Vineet Garg.

All independent tests that have been performed since XP, which did benefit from service tweaks, have concluded that the tweaks performed on the NT series 6 Operating systems, (Vista to 10), are either neutral or negative, so are best left as they come from Microsoft.

Microsoft actually purchased some data from Black Viper to aid with the development of Project Longhorn, (that eventually morphed into Vista ), so a lot of the good tweaks that were effective in XP were already in Vista.

Even though a user may decide they will never need a service some software developer may design a piece of software, and assuming that the service will be running the developer will "Borrow" the functionality provided by the service for an unrelated task/

The general consensus amongst IT professionals is it's best to let the OS handle the services it needs. If you feel you must remove a service, set it to manual start from automatic and never to disabled to cover for the unexpected.

It the same with a lot of users complain about the amount of memory that W& etc use compared with XP, this is by design and rather than wasting memory it is actually using memory that would otherwise be wasted.

The ideal is to use as much memory as possible without ever actually running out, which is the way that modern systems are designed

I first noticed that is was down last week. Assuming that you want to know default service settings extract the attached file and drag it into a new tab in your browser.

In the past I have disabled some services that I thought were not needed, but were. I have no desire to down that road again, considering that the gains are so marginal. The problem is that there is no public documentation anywhere that fully describes what each service does. Black Viper has no access to such documentation and must rely on published information, which is not complete. Some services are known to do more than documented. A particular issue with Windows 10 is that this may change with any update. You can't expect Microsoft to advise of changes in undocumented behavior.

OK, service tweaking is not right but for fun ?

hi to all,
Sir(s),
Thanks for quick responses BUT...
1) @ Callender , Thanks sir, but i am interested in deep information segment ! i.e. descriptions of each service by BlackViper [EDIT : surprisingly, when you go in deeply, it recommends to change settings other way! for eg: WLAN AutoConfig, Windows Driver foundation, etc. so its very important to go in speciifc descriptions for each service ]

2) @ LMiller7 & Barman58 , Thanks for prompt responses. it's great stuff and my mind has started to drift away from the services' tweaking idea but i can't tell !

Thanks & Regards.

Just my thought and opinion.

Years ago I tinkered with Black Viper Services recommendation.
All tinkering proved useless or damaging.

Microsoft know what services do what and when. As far as I know Microsoft has not released what services link to what and in what fashion. I doubt that anybody besides Microsoft really knows.

If one tinkers with services this tutorial by Brink will guide you back to default setting for services in Windows 7.
