    Now I tried:

    C:\Windows\system32>icacls e:\ /grant Users:(W)

But it is still not returning right away. I think I can hear the HDD working, but, shouldning it be done now? I only have about 50 files and maybe 20 dirs in the E:\ dir.

It worked! Now I can save a text file in E:\ and when I choose "New", it is fully populated!

But none of the subdirs, exactly as you said.

Now I just have to see if I dare type the propagating command. I think there are 100000 files on the drive. Maybe it could take a week?

    Thank you so much!

Okay, so I did it. I typed the command "icacls e:\ /grant Users:(OI)(CI)(W)" in a cmd.exe window run as administrator.

When I came back from dinner, it had finished, so I don't know how long it took, but not more than 30 minutes. 147,183 files and 9163 folders.

Now, I just tested it in a few folders on drive e:, and it seems the "new" menu is now properly populated, exactly as you suggested.

Super! I can't thank you enough.
