    Hi:

It could be that the speakers died on such an old device?

Since this is a DELL, have you tried the built-in, pre-boot hardware diagnostics?
Provides means to test all the hardware.

Tap F12* during a cold start to bring it up > follow the screen steps.

    Just a thought...

*That is the usual key on a Dell. I don't know about your specific model.

You do not have the correct sound driver installed. All you have is the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec.

First step it to install the correct sound driver. The Dell downloads list a Conexant driver for Vista, that will work on Win 7.

    ^^ Good catch! ^^

I didn't see any Yellow Exclamation points, so I went down the hardware path by mistake.
I didn't notice the generic driver.
(I'd "rep" ya' but I need to spread some love, first.)

    Cheers,

That's OK. The driver may not fix it, considering the headset works, but something that is needed anyway.
May also be the wrong device (not Speakers) set as default playback device.

ok i installed the new drivers from the above link, still no change, also the generic basic function drivers were installed from beginning and speakers were fine couple of weeks ago

That would be the next thing to check.

    Dang!
    I need more Geritol.

I thought the OP said that is DOES work with the headphones, but that the speakers without the headphones do not work?

OK. I am going out now for a Geritol refill.

    Back later,

    MM

PS If you're too young to know what Geritol is, you don't need it.
