Could a bad CPU fan really be causing all this?

Are you using a motherboard network or a network expansion card (PCI, PCI-E or USB)?

Motherboard network components seem to be the first components to fail (based on personal experience with multiple motherboards over the past 15 years).

It's possible that the network just happened to fail (coincidentally) while you were trying to solve your fan issue.

Do you have access to a network expansion card?
If yes, you could install that to see if it fixes your network issues (the cards are cheap < $20).

At this point I've decided to just go in another direction and set up a new computer. The one I had was an older one (Optiplex GX280) that I've had for about 6 years. I was getting blue screen errors yesterday as well, and it's all just adding up to it's time to move on and upgrade, it's becoming more frustration than it's worth at this point. Thank you to everyone who tried to help, it's much appreciated!
