Windows 7 64 bit won't Restart or Shutdown and Skype also Hangs

Hello All,

I am here because I am hoping someone can help me with this computer problem I am having.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on a PC. I noticed when trying to run Skype recently that the system would hang. Total freeze, no BSOD and I have to do a power restart to get it up again. Naturally I tried reinstalling it and using a few older version to no avail. Then I realized that I can't even restart or shut down the PC. It hangs in shutdown and the spinning shutdown icon just freezes.

Here are some other pieces of info that might help:

*I downloaded Malware-bytes and Microsoft Essential Security and both report no issues

*I have all Windows updates downloaded minus a bunch of optional ones

*I ran sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt but it had not issues (see attached image)

*I have run a chckdsk on bootup and it seems fine (see attached image) though after it finished the computer was unable to restart and I had to hard power restart again.

*I am running a SSD with the operating system on it and another hard drive for data storage

Any help that can be offered is Greatly Appreciated.

Try a clean boot.
Launch msconfig and disable all startup programs and disable all services but MS.
Reboot.
See if it runs normally and then run Skype.
If everything runs, go back to msconfig and enable services.
Reboot.
If it does run normally, its a startup program.
If it doesn't run normally, its a service.
Disable second half of suspicions (programs or services)
Reboot.
Continue till you find the bad guy.

Hey Megahertz07,

Thanks I will give that a try. I guess I find it weird that it wont shutdown either. I tried safe mode and it shutdowns normally from there. Would this lead you to believe it is a driver issue? I am questioning if its my graphics card but I am not sure how I would deduce that. Thanks again.

Hey Megahertz07,

I did try a clean boot and unfortunately it still hangs on shutdown and restart. First I disabled all startup programs and that didn't change anything. Then I disabled everything but miscrosoft services to no avail. I even tried disable everything so only 3 or 4 Microsoft services were left running but even that won't shutdown cleanly. Should I disable series of stuff but not everything or have I exhausted this method? Thanks for all your help.

Doesn't seem to be a conflict with any service or startup program.
Boot on safe mode (during POST press F8). See if the problem remains.
Boot again in safe mode and launch Skype. See if the problem remains.
Report.
