Start menu -> Command prompt -> right click -> run as admin = error

I'm currently experiencing a problem in Windows 10 with StartIsBack, but I've experienced the same problem on Win7 as well when I used to use W7. The problem is I never know when it started happening (as I don't do the steps needed to invoke it often) and by the time I notice it's too late to do system restore to undo it.

I posted on TenForums but since it occurred to people I was using StartIsBack rather than the useless W10 start menu I got no advice. Well, guess what, the problem is exactly the same with the W7 start menu - that's why I've decided to repost it here. (As a result, the screenshots look like W10 but the problem is the same as on 7... maybe the wording might be slightly different, I don't remember, but the problem is the same)


The problem is, when typing Command prompt into the start search box, then right clicking it and choosing run as admin, there's an error. I can right click a shortcut and run as admin or even just type cmd.exe into the start search box and run as admin, with no problem. But when right clicking Command Prompt in the start menu and running as admin, it doesn't work.

I can even invoke the error by searching for Task Manager (EDIT: don't remember if Task Manager is in the Start Menu in W7, but same problem anyway), or On-Screen Keyboard, and various other Windows system tools. It seems that if I right click, and "Run as Administrator" does not have a shield icon, it will error if I click it. Refer to screenshots below:




So, how can I finally fix this?

In my computer it worked, opening the CMD window.
What kind of account is yours?
Instead of StartIsBack try classic shell - Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

On a fresh install of Win7 (or Win10+StartIsBack), it works perfectly, but after a while at some point in time the error will start happening again. I would rather not reinstall Windows every time this happens.

What kind of account? On Win10 I'm using a local account... either way this should not matter, just ignore the fact that I'm currently on Win10, the exact same problem happens on Win7.

The account type I was referring: Standard, Administrator or Guest.
What anti virus you're using?

If on a clean install it doesn't happen, you may have a malware.

Admin account
Unlikely to be malware because the exact same problem always seems to come back and on different PCs. That's why I find it hard to believe no one else has ever had this issue and if they did they never noticed or posted online about it
