How to Remove 'Open With' Options -Safely?

How do you remove 'Open With' options in a safe way?

Mainly I’m talking about jpegs but I’d image the steps apply to any ‘open with’ item. I have Window Picture Viewer as the default program to open jpegs, and that’s what I want.

However, I often have need to open a jpeg in a photo editor or other utility but my ‘open with’ list is so full of stuff I don’t use, there’s no room for another option. For example, I’m never going to use a browser to open one, nor do I need the hand full of printer options, like ‘open’ photo book and the like.

By ‘safely,’ I mean how do I revert back to a specific ‘open with’ option if I delete one in error?

    Thanks
    .

You can use this to selectively enable/ disable entries. Note: Windows Photo Viewer entry is "photoviewer.dll" but the others should be straightforward.

OpenWithView - Disable/Enable items in the 'Open With' dialog-box of Windows

This is a bit more involved: Open with - Clean Up and Remove Programs

And to revert: Open with - Add Program check the related tutorials at the bottom of each for more on your subject.

If your anti-virus [Avast] throws a warning when downloading or installing any nirsoft product don't worry it is a false positive.
Q: The antivirus software on my computer reports that some of the your utilities are infected with a virus or trojan. What should I do ?

A: First of all, All the utilities in my Web site are clean, and they don't contain any virus or trojan. Unfortunately, Antivirus programs are not perfect, and in many times they detects innocent software as infected with trojan or virus. This problem is known as 'False Positive' or 'False Alert', and it's quite common in password-recovery tools. If your antivirus software reports that utilities you downloaded from this Web site are infected with a virus or trojan, I highly recommend you to contact your antivirus company and ask them to fix this 'False Positive' problem in the next update of your antivirus software. You can also contact NirSoft to report about 'False Positive' problems. Click here to view the latest 'False Positive' problems reported by users from around the world.

Yours is not related to pass-word recovery and I didn't see OpenWithView on the false positive list, but, just in case.....

    My pleasure, TDKMate.

I usually don't review tutorials , I go by Brink's title for them and that's how I posted the link for you, but in review of Open with - Clean Up and Remove Programs I found it uses Nir Sofer's OpenWithView the link supplied by Callender, imagine that!

Then in review of the second one: Open with - Add Program I found the link for Ramesh Srinivasan in Option Two points to a 404 Not Found error, if you still want to use Ramesh's utility use the link in Option Two #1: Registering programs with the "Open With" dialog it will take you to the utility's page on Ramesh's site.

    My apologies for any confusion.
