The One Step Method of Backing up all your settings and documents

Have you ever found that backing up your precious settings and documents is a nightmare, or your worried that you could suddenly lose them with a hardware failure.

With this method you can backup the settings of every program thats installed plus your documents and pictures, messenger and email.

    1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to c:\user folder.
    2. Here you will see your main user account. Now simply copy this to another hard drive (should be a phsyical seperate hard drive rather than a partition) or burn it to cd/dvd.

If you have more than one user account on your computer, dont forget to back those up.

If during the copying process you get messages saying that some files cannot be copied and look like system files then chose skip and continue copying the rest of the files.

Note: I do not recommend when you wish to restore your settings and files that you do a wholesale copy to the new system. Instead do it one program at a time.

[if some kind person would like to make this into a sevenforum standard tutorial I would be grateful, as long as I am credited as originator]

    Hi Swarfega,

That happens to be exactly what I already do on a fairly regular basis and it is good practice IMO, why don't you create a tutorial for this, I'm sure Shawn will help tidy it up for you if you do the basic ground work. I asked him if he could help on one mine before and it made it look very professional.

    Hello swarfega.

Just have a look through the tutorial section to get the basics and do as Mr Grim has suggested and communicate with Brink about the basics of creating a tutorial; I'm sure he'll be glad to assist you.

It should be noted that if the person is actually using their profile folder to save all their files and documents then this is a great way to backup.

However a lot of people don't store their data in their profile.

For example I don't and never used the My Documents folder and any of its sub folders. I always have my files on another drive or partition.
