A few months ago a techy person helped me upgrade most of the hardware in my desktop win 7 computer. We think one of the processor cores was going out. We replaced the motherboard, the processor - an i5, added new ram - two 16 gig sticks and installed a new harddrive that had a cloned version of the drive made with Acronis about 6 months ago. We used the cloned drive because it was a new motherboard windows would not boot into the old drive so as long as we had to reinstall windows I used the newer much larger drive. Got it working, I reinstalled all the software although some we were able to open with from the old windows files. I do not use it very often, maybe only a few hours three times a week.
This morning I turned it on and it only got to the windows flash screen with the little colored balls swirling around then the screen went black. I did a hard reboot and the same thing happened. I rebooted again and went through the repair option. It tried rebooting and the same thing happened. Windows said if it wouldn't boot it would automatically go into repair mode but it didn't. I kept getting a report that it cannot fix the problem. I still went through various options but got nothing except that it may have had something to do with a recently installed device. I did not recently install a device.
I followed the instructions in this forum - thank you and after three repair attempts and trying to restore from a recovery (?) the last time I had it on with no success. I unplugged all USB devices except the mouse and keyboard and took out one memory stick and it booted up normally. I may have gone through more than 3 repair attempts.
I do not know which thing helped. Right now I am using windows to image the drive onto an external HD which is taking a very long time. I used to have Acronis but it was one of the software I lost and had not got around to figuring out how to reinstall it. But, hey I wasn't worried because I have a new drive. What could go wrong?
In all of my years of using win 7 this has never happened before. I don't want to try rebooting it to see if it is still okay and then again after putting the one stick of ram back in until I have the drive imaged.
What causes this to happen? Is there some problem with the hardware - this is practically a new computer. Is it just one of those things that happen once in a rare while?

first thoughts
You used a 32 bit OS clone NOT a system image - Your new motherboard would have likely been different
NOT a good idea
Clones are NOT the same as an image
You should have had the new motherboards install disc, assume you updated the drivers and did the chipset first.
I pretty sure that the above is the root of your problem.
Please copy any of your personnal data to an external device.

Well we reinstalled windows from the disc on what had been a cloned disc. The cloned disc would not boot up because it did not have the same MB drivers, etc. I knew it would not work. I used it because it was almost new and larger. Since we had to reinstall windows it didn't make sense to use the old smaller drive.
It saved the old windows files which helped since I could recover quite a bit. The tech guy installed the drivers for the new motherboard and anything else that needed a driver after the fresh install of windows. Since then it has been running fine for a month. I had all of my personal data on a separate internal HD and once this image back up is finished I will back up a few more things. I was prepared for a problem. The techy guy did not know as much as he claimed he did.
I did not know that 32 bit would only support 4 gb of ram. Do you think that is the problem? I will have to buy an emergency 4 gb ram if that is the case. I think he took the old ram with him.
I looked into getting a 64 bit version but that would require a complete new reinstall and I would have to buy it. The 32 bit I have the disc for is an OEM disc. The fellow that put this computer together 6 years ago gave me that even though I asked for a full professional version (another long story). It does not qualify for a free 64 bit update. Then I am back to spending days reinstalling all of the software. I need to start a project which I need one of the programs and I do not know if it will run on 64 bit. I had planned on getting the project done, buying a 64 bit version of win and starting over again. In the meantime I would like to keep that computer running. My win 10 laptop which I am using now, is just for backup.
The imaging is going about 10% per hour so I can't run any tool until tomorrow since I still have about 6 or 7 hours to go - if it will boot up. What will the tool do?

Okay. Roy. thank you. Maybe I will just quit the imaging since it is taking so long and run the tool. The clone wasn't the headache. having to reinstall windows because of a motherboard upgrade was the problem. I will let you know what happens with the tool.

I have been using computers since DOS 2.0 and I can't figure out in my head how on earth to run programs from a different drive that the one that Windows is installed on. If programs need to be installed within Windows how can they be located on a different drive? That concept completely baffles me.
I have a second internal drive just for backing things up which I could use as you suggest but it is a small drive and 6 years old. I have another 2 TB HD that I could put in it's place instead.
I am downloading Macrium.
