status report

According to MalWareBytes, eSet, and SuperAntiSpyware, my system is clean. There are no more files whose FILE_ATTRIBUTE_ENCRYPTED bits are set. I am tired now, so I'll do the big Normal Mode experiment tomorrow.

I've been running it for 2 years or so now, with updates as they are available, so it might be corrupt, but a bad download doesn't seem as likely. I'm paid up until next year, I think.

What do you think about uninstalling it and then immediately reinstalling it, speculating that the new download will be OK? Of course, all of this is contingent on the theory that my problems have all been routed out by the other AV programs, and that the only lingering issue is with a malfunctioning Kaspersky program. That is not yet proven, to say the least.
Ok mate my bad if I read it as you were thinking of changing to something else.

My further comment was to just say that I personally have not had any problems with KISS .

The reinstalling was just a suggestion and only that and I guess I should leave this one alone as the others are giving you advice and that I am throwing the preverbial spanner in the works but saying what I would do.

Downloads in any case are usually very regional for example I built a machine for my brother in the UK some years ago installed and configured the KISS for him out here - only to find that the Australian version would not work in the UK he ad to get it from over there.
The reference to Github I found a little odd because one of our senior members here developed this in the site GitHub - Superfly-Inc/ShowKeyPlus: Windows product key finder and validation checker

So I shall leave you in peace now.

Don't think that you have disturbed my peace. You & Layback Bear have graciously spent time with me in a trying situation, bringing me closer to peace. Of course, I'm not out of the woods yet.

I was going to start the day by uninstalling Kaspersky, reinstalling it, and going back into Normal Mode, but I realized that the Kaspersky people might want to salvage some forensics from the existing, probably damaged, installation. I am waiting to hear from them, so others who have been waiting for the next episode of my Gothic adventure story will have to wait a little longer.

Sounds like a solid idea. Let us know what Kaspersky want you to do.

A infection could of corrupted Kaspersky and many other things.
A corrupted update of Kaspersky could of caused the problem.
Their are just so many things that it could be.

Well lastly I have to say that I do run those other scans as well as KISS because it does not pick literally everything up and in fact I think none of the AV's do.

I have said before at the rate that new malware is put out everyday unless those companies have a direct feed from the malware producers then the said malware could be possibly hidden for seconds, days, months or even a year before it is picked up by the security people and added to it's watch data base.

There was an instance I think it was the new 2016 version of KISS that had bugs galore and I didn't know why the system was so out of whack until after speaking to the techies in Melbourne - because they had not put out any info on those issues - and it was driving me nuts. So if you are waiting to hear from them as with the local and global forums replies I have always found them to be very slow. Hopefully you will have better luck.

Kaspersky is on the case; they responded to my inquiry promptly. Unfortunately, their modus operandi seems to be a loop of
  • ask me for some data
  • get a near-immediate response
  • wait 24 hours
  • repeat
so I have nothing to report but that they, unlike me, seem to be cheerful and not yet out of ideas.

Well I rest my case exactly what I have found in the past as I previously mentioned.

I wasn't saying they were slow as in a response of in say a reply more that the response as you have found requires more info, the 24 hour wait. Having said that I think I have had queries from way back in the Kaspersky Lab forum that still have not been answered.

I think I'd do a clean install :-) It's quicker than it used to be. I had an issue recently (which I think turned out to be a corrupted Windows file caused by who knows what). AV's didn't pick up anything. So decided to just clean install. It was definitely worth it as it's faster now, has more storage space and I haven't bothered to reinstall a lot of programs that, frankly, weren't really necessary most of the time. I'll probably end up installing some of them again at some point. It took me less than 2 days to do clean install and update and put all files back on and most programs. Although obviously depends how much you have on yours :-)

Windows updates were all done within a couple of hours. It was up and running within a day. I think it's worth reformatting, doing a clean install, and then doing a macrium back up, personally. Quicker than trying to find a solution maybe. And peace of mind that you have a clean system before backing up.

I don't know what the issue with Nero was, but I gave up on it after using it. I just use Windows for DVD burning and Cyberlink Power Director for video editing now.

I was also getting freezing (and hanging) so knew something wasn't right. With AV - people have their preferences. Kaspersky gave me false positives once, which I followed through and wrecked my system lol. So I'm off that one. Have found Avira good though.

@hazel123:
You are probably right, although formatting & reinstallation for me, judging from the last time I moved to a new computer, would take over a week.

Yesterday, I gave up on Kasperskly's one-email-message-per-day script followers, and went to their Live Chat interface. I was promised that my case would be transferred to their "Escalated Team," and I feel obligated to go through at least one interaction with the ET. But if they don't get in touch with me today, I will proceed on my own.
