Windows 7: Cannot install most anything.

Cannot install most anything.

At first, thought it was the application ... but it happens on most anything I try to install/update. W7-64 Toshiba laptop.

The apps will install .. either in and of themselves OR in the case of pushed upgrade. They even run 'just fine' until the next restart/boot up.

During that routine, W7 comes up in a recovery mode .. saying something like Your computer cannot be started then goes into a 'repair' routine and then comes up as if the item was never installed (Looks like the machine does a System Restore) .... the machine reverts back to where it was before the item installed.

Goofy, goofy problem, but I am hoping it is a simple fix. Seems something is out of sync.

One more thing, these items are all products that have worked and upgraded in the past. Thank you for any help in advance.

- Schedule a disk check. On Explorer, right click on the C: - Properties - tools tab - Error check - Check now - Auto fix - schedule for next start.
Pay attention on the results.

- After disk check, do a system file check. On a cmd run sfc /scannow

Thank you for your attention.

First, I upgraded an app from v 4.0 to 4.1 in order to create the error state. It installed just fine ... no problems at all.

Next, I scheduled a disk test at next boot.

Next, I attempted sfc /scannow and it said another task is scheduled. Complete that task and try again.

Restarted Machine. During boot, STARTUP REPAIR invoked. THIS TIME, it could not finish. Machine shut down. Restarted it manually and it came back up .... with 4.1 installed .... as if it is FIXED except it errored with 'cannot run because service is not started'. Went to services, and its service was not even listed. So, I tried installing 4.1 again. This time, it installed and ran properly. THEN I tried restarting the machine and .... BACK to startup repair .

In previous testing, I ran sfc /scannow first and when finished, ran a scheduled chkdsk /f that showed no errors. This happens with other program installation too.

Hi, I would be running a Virus scan and a Malware scan in safe mode.

Thank you for the suggestion. I suspect it has to do with the errors listed in the attachment.

OK, try this.
Go to Tweaking.com download WinRepair and run that in safe mode or as advised.

Gave that a good try ... and the machine never booted up again. I have restored an IMAGE back up and am now updating that iteration. Thank you all for the assistance.

You have already lost a lot of time and still far from a solution.
My suggestion
- Do a Windows repair Repair Install - Windows 7 Help Forums
- For the updates MS releases SP2 for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

Guess I was not clear. I have opted to restore an entire image backup ... which I know to be good. In updating that restoration, it appears the problem is resolved. Thank you all again.
