Windows 7: Can't use non-MS icons for .URL shortcuts

Can't use non-MS icons for .URL shortcuts

I have a multitude of .ico files on my system, most of which I constructed from other graphic files using mainly IrfanView.

However, suddenly any Internet shortcuts I have (only a few) that were using any of these icons, have reverted back to a generic MS icon (the globe).

Changing them to any of my constructed icons, or anything other than MS icons, does not work.

The only significant thing I've done in the last few days is have a mishap with one of my USB drives -- some of whose files are copies of the .ico files.

Time to open the registry?

How to stop icons of selected shortcuts from being dimmed?
I'm using the Windows Classic theme in Win7 Starter. By default, Windows always dims the desktop icon of a shortcut when it is selected, whether it's a transparent icon or not. Is there a way to prevent this? Highlighting the text of the shortcut is enough of an indication that it has been selected.
