Logging off and Starting Windows hang up

For the last few weeks, I have have problems with Windows. When I try to turn my computer off, it locks up on the "Logging Off" page. Today, I left it that way for 2 hours before hard turning it off. This has happened multiple times.

When I turn it back on, it locks up on the "Windows Starting" page or it tells me that it did not log off correctly and recommends going through the repair process. I go through the repair and/or restore process but it finds nothing to repair and the restore process only lists the most resent restore point... which are bad. I did not create an image so that is not an option.

I have logged on in Safe Mode but cannot find anything wrong.

It does eventually start but the next time I log off, I have to go through the same issues.

I have disconnected everything but the mouse, keyboard, and monitors even though I have not installed anything new for at least a year.

I think that is all the relevant information.

    System: Windows 7 64-bit, 8 GB RAM

Hello Jim now when you say you started in safe mode just what did you do??

If you didn't do these then please so and mate it is important to have specs for the system so see this first before doing the other stuff.

Nowbefore we can help we do need to know what is in your machine soplease do this System Info - See Your System Specs

oreither enter the specs of your system in your forum profile the specswill appear when we click on that little box bottom left of the postscreen it is for me the preferable option as it is easy. As you mayappreciate it is very hard when you don’t know what one is workingwith for example a diesel or petrol engine.

Thank you for your advice. I have tried all of them and except for some cookies that one or the other of those malware programs said might be dangerous, nothing was detected. I ran chkdsk and it did not find any damage.

Doesn't Windows have a program that scans its functions and other essential drivers to find damaged software? It seems obvious to me that somehow and element of Windows IS damaged.

I am still having problems. At the moment, I am using my laptop because I cannot get Windows to launch.

I have tried that twice now and it says: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations" but there is obviously something wrong and getting worse. Now it cannot even find an internet connection even though I am currently using the same on my laptop and even though the troubleshooter reports that it can find no problems. I cannot create new folders nor move a file from one folder to another without Windows Explorer becoming none responsive. The issues are mounting but none of these tools report any errors.

I'm thinking you have a program and maybe a driver that is hanging up.

Try this and see if it helps. It's a process of elimination.

Also unplug everything from your computer except monitor, mouse and keyboard.

    Here is another option.

    Hi Jack,
After finally being able to turn on Windows, I started msconfic and disabled all none Windows services. When I restarted the computer, it automatically ran chkdsk. It ran ok until it got to the “CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...” and then it froze. It has been that way for abt 2 hours now. What now?
