Win 7 ultimate 64bit, can I use current OEM Key and reinstall

    Hello all,
I have a hand me down VAIO laptop that is running Win 7 ultimate 64 bit and MS Office. I used productkey to find out the Win OEM prodcut key and also the MS Office product key.
I have been having problems for a while and the computer wont let me restart unless is on safe mode, I tried repairing it but it doesnt work. I dont have a back up and no restore date so I can't go back to before it started acting up.

Can I copy as much as I can on an external harddrive and install Win 7 ultimate from the beginning and use the OEM product key I have? can I do the same to reinstall MS Office?

    Hi Foxtrot,
unlikely that comp came with Ultimate, but possible.
Make an image most here use Macrium (free)

There should be a COA sticker on it showing the originally installed OS type, and a spare key
    (dont post it)
IF it states Ultimate try a factory reset
run this little tool, copy/paste the output
(it will show errors but thats because your in safe mode)

    We'll go from there

Thank you Roy for the reply, that is a good question, my sister gave me the laptop so I am not sure if she later installed the Win 7 Ultimate, I was able to get the product key using produkey. I haven't checked for a sticker, I will check tonight and run the tool you mention and will post it.
    Thank you again!

Hello, sorry it took a long time to get back, I checked the sticker below and the originally installed OS was Windows Vista Home Premium OEMAct. I guess they installed Windows 7 because if I recall Windows Vista was not the greatest OS. So it seems that I have a original Windows Vista product key(sticker) and Windows 7 Ultimate installed. I rather have the Windows Ultimate, I have an ISO Win 7 Ultimate on a flash drive, I am just scared that if I install Win 7 and enter the product key I got from ProduKey it will not work.

A windows vista key obviously wont work on a Win 7 installation.
As Roy suggested, you should run http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012 and post the results here. If it's a genuine key, we can guide you to get the installed key.

Is there anything that I should whiteout(product key, product key hash, product ID, product ID type, ID) before posting the results?
