I completed an upgrade from XP to Windows 7 Home Premium. I have seen articles stating that there should be by default a Vista style network icon in the notification area. My install has no such icon. On XP I could go to network and click/check "Display Icon". How can I add the network icon, what am I doing wrong?

The Network icon is not the same as in Vista or XP anymore in Windows 7. Instead it's the one in the example screenshot in the tutorial below.
Do you have the Windows 7, or Vista if no Windows 7 ones are available, network adapter drivers installed for it?
Sometimes a restart will add it. If not, then the tutorial below may be able to help.

I have a similar query
I've been running Windows 7 for a couple of weeks now after upgrading from Vista and it have been going well
However, earlier this evening I shut down my laptop and when I restarted it my network notification image changed. Previously it had been like the first image here (an animated gradient which indicated the level of wireless connection). Now it just has the image which seems to be dotted around this site of a monitor with a cable next to it, like the second image here. The weird thing also is that it has a cross next to it when I am connected to the wireless network.
Is this a common problem? I don't know why it changed or how to change it back or even how to make it tell me that it is connected, or it has detected networks.
I hope someone can offer some help.

@ Ian The second Icon shows that you are not connected. Try right click on icon and then select trouble shoot. That is the first step.
Okay I'll try but I am connected to a wireless network, just not an ethernet one, but I haven't used any ethernet connections with Windows 7. I'll post if anything happens.

It's not finding any problems, but I think it's because there aren't any per se. The problem appears to lie in the fact that it wants to tell me about the LAN but I only want a notification to do with wireless networks, which was what it was like before I restarted my laptop. :/
Just a different setup process. Here's whatcha do:
Right-click on the Desktop. Select Personalize.
In the top right corner of the "Change the visuals and sounds" page there is a link to "Change desktop icons". Click it.
In the window that opens next, select by checkmark the icons you want on your desktop. Click OK to finish.
Just for reference for future cases with a similar case to mine, I went into the network menu and disabled the LAN setting as suggested in another thread and then restarted the computer and it is back to the icon I want.
