I use Opera as my browser, so I am not familiar with Firefox. With Opera, all I have to do save a web page is right click the mouse on the web page & select Save As. This then opens what I have shown in my screen shot in Post #8.

Hmm well you took the words out of my mouth by suggesting another browser like IE and your description of the issue was better to understand. Now another thing you could do is uninstall then reinstall Firefox of course.
Now admittedly I am on a 10 machine but it works perfectly the only thing different is I don't use any right clicks .

Which bring me back to my hobby horse the KB and mouse because I cannot think of anything that would cause this drifting. Now something I would try is while this drifting off is occurring unplug those devices and see it it stops.

Hi Everyone, I am using Firefox, and under Options, General, I have save files to Downloads checked,

and anything I download, I just click save and it is saved to the Downloads file.

Ethel's advice could be worth trying, as the Downloads Folder is the default for downloads, so making sure Firefox always uses that folder might be solution.

Thanks everyone for input.
Ethel: While an idea, will have to cut / paste from Download which is few extra steps.
ICIT2LOL: Still going with your idea. Plan to dismantel and clean Keyboard this weekend.

Ok dw now as some of the screws can be quite small a tip spread a large white bath towel on the work surface and do this on that because often the screws will be dropped bounce of the work surface and onto the floor and in some case oblivion

Now it has been a long time since I took one of those older type keyboards apart and you may find (as well as crud) there will be many small parts hence the towel and a good idea is if you haven't done this before is to take pics of each stage with your phone so that the reverse order is easier and usually I find quicker. Depending on the contact system it just means cleaning contacts with some rubbing alcohol we call it methylated spirit out here - very cheap and evaporates quite quickly so you do not have to worry about moisture being left behind.

Now depending on who is the boss in the house I hold the towel onto the work surface with a little duct tape but I a ma lucky cos I live on my own LOL!!

ICIT2LOL: Old hat at this, but Thanks for Reminder. Never hurts.
Got Keyboard and Mouse apart and cleaned so will see what if anything occurs over next days, weeks, months.

Yep mate I always chuck that in cos you never know if someone has done stuff like that before and as I lost that many screws from laptops before I woke up to myself that I was getting too old to dive and catch the falling screw - a falling star perhaps LOL!! - good luck and keep in mind mate another KB maybe borrow one for a test??

Followup:

Been following this for awhile, and after cleaning --no change.
Cursor still jumping to different directory periodically.
Most notably when creating "new folder".
Get a chance will try new keyboard and mouse.
Anyone else got this problem?.

dw mate never a good idea to invite others to your thread - it can make for quite a bit of confusion when we are posting back. I personally have been caught by answering what I thought was the original poster but in fact someone different and the problem is worsened by when others do exactly the same thing and I am not trying to be pedantic but it is in the rules mate not to jump in on threads for that very reason.

Look anyway I do hope a new kb and mouse will sort the problem.
