Cursor Changes Directories in Explorer Without User Action

When using Explorer to do Various Things (e.g. Rename folder, Download and Save Web Page, other(?))
I find the cursor moves to another directory.
For example I was downloading a web page in Firefox.
I used Explorer to select the directory of interest.
After clicking the directory but before I could hit save,
the Cursor jumped to the "Download" directory in Explorer.

Any ideas, and anyway to Stop this action?

Hello dw mate I would do some simple scans if you haven't done them already

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f switch and if this does not make any improvement then just run this switch instead /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary

You could also give these a whirl too

ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)
Plus just remember MBAM is downloading a trial version at the moment for two weeks and will nag so if you dont want that or the trouble that my Kaspersky kicks up then disable/uninstall it after you have used it but the choice is yours of course your AV might

    ICIT2LOL:
    Thanks for post.
    Past this point.
This is one of several issues, but so far system has come up clean.
No Viruses, SFC OK, Chkdsk has found issues but believe MOST corrected now.

Ok well might be worth trying a different KB and mouse for example I recently had months of posts to the forum being dropped and tried everything and then just tried a wifi mouse instated of the wired gamer one and bingo away went the problem. There are some things that happen sometimes that have no rhyme or reason so give that a try.

    ICIT2LOL:
Believe have all other issues corrected but this persists.
Taking your comments -- especially mouse -- seriously and will monitor.
Had never considered maybe mouse movement after clicking.
In my case it normally occurs when creating a New Folder on Primary Partition.
New Folder shows, but then mouse cursor "sometimes" jumps to Libraries or I enter two or three characters and the New Folder names stops allowing me to edit and considers that those characters are the folder name.

Ok mate keep us advised because the peripherals like mice do cause some odd problems at times like "creep" the sensor becomes out of whack the the cursor will literally creep across the page or cause the screen to creep up or down side to side etc

By the way what brand of mouse and KB are you using?.

Now I am not saying this is definitely your issue but worth try another device even a small cheap one would suffice

The Download directory is the default for downloading items from the internet.

If you right click on what you want to save from the web & select Save As you should get the Download directory & what you wish to save it as. On my computer this window also has all the other directories such as Documents listed in the LH margin. This screen shot explains it better.

Well seems like the mouse and the KB are reasonably old?? I would definitely try another KB and Mouse but the budget and choice is yours.

Now see what Ranger has posted to find those directories.

Myself I keep Downloads for an example as a short cut on my desktop only because I am constantly using it.

Now assuming the machine is quite old have you defragged the drive or tested it in any way? If not it might be worth doing those and also a disk cleanup.

Disk Cleanup - Open and Use - Windows 7 Help Forums to tidy up the clutter

The defrag well it is in Start> All programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk defragmenter only don't use this if it is an SSD drive.

Ranger4 (based on your post let me clarify). ICIT2LOL don't mean to ignore you.

As a simple example, lets say I want to save a web page.
I select Firefox menu choice File, Save As
    This brings up Windows Explorer.
I navigate to the drive and directory where I want to save the page.
I then right click to select "new folder"
After clicking "new folder" directory appears.
Sometimes it appears with a focus rectangle around it to edit.
Other times the "new folder" is just highlighted (no focus rectangle)
If no focus rectangle, I then right click the "new folder", select rename from the menu and the focus rectangle appears.
It's normally at this point the cursor may jump to "somewhere" else such as "download", the drive letter, or the primary directory where the new folder resides. No consistency I can determine on this.
This forces me to reclick, "new folder" and at that point I can usually rename it.
Other times won't let me edit and have to click "new folder" several times to edit.
Once renamed, I then save the downloaded page.

What I think is happening is that somewhere along the line a message is pumped to the top of windows message cue at times and this causes the cursor to jump directories. What message (probably treeview related) and why?

One thought I had is maybe use IE for awhile and see if same thing happens, as may be Firefox related. Whether this is shown under eventviewer and what eventid it would be might help track it down -- if anyone knows a possible eventid to monitor?
