How to temporarily get permission from, or as, a Trusted Installer?

I want to replace on of ths system's sounds (in the Windows Media folder) with another of the same type (wav).

I can't see how to get the permission needed.

What must I do to achieve this?

Hi, You need to "Take Ownership" of the folder the file is in that you want to modify.

I found this program a few days ago.. that might be useful.. but you can only do one file at a time or the whole folder...
I have already done all the TAKING OWNERSHIP for files in the Windows sub-folders that I needed to do so... for the program files folder(s) because I run programs old style with Settings stored in the program folders the way I like like it.. it makes for easier/quicker backups...

ie. I have not actually tried this program yet.. I have it downloaded just not used yet..

Thank you MeOnMine, I had read that tutorial and started to follow it. I found that the screens displayed on this PC were sufficiently different for me to abandon it, at least temporarily.

Brilliant. Thank you Melchior, that's done exactly what I want.

What I originally wanted to do was replace Window 7's log-on sound with XP's version, which does a better job of getting attention. But I thought if I'm going to do that I might as well do the job properly.

I decided to use another sound instead - Entry (or Entrance) of the Gladiators, a.k.a. The Circus Music.

    Much better.

    COOL!
how did you change the default Windows Startup sound?!
I looked and its set as a check-box only.... I can change the logon and logoff sounds etc..
but not the startup sound... I I guess I wouldn't mind giving that a go..
    ONLY problem..
its wave files only AND are the conditions to the wave file such as??
    - File Size
    - clip length
    - etc

    EDIT:
ooh you did say logon-sound and not startup.. lol

Above the "Play Windows Startup Sound" check-box there's a window called Program Events.

If you click on any of those entries the name of the sound file associated with it is displayed in the Sounds window beneath. Alongside that is the Test button and a Browse button.
The Browse button lets you see all the Windows wav files from which to choose.

They are in the Windows/Media folder on the C drive. Having taken ownership of that folder I can paste in other wav files.

I have no idea what, if any, size restrictions there are. Hovering over the existing wav files shows that they vary from less that 100kB to over 300kB. My added Circus music wav is 1.14MB and that works fine.

There are programs to convert from one audio file type to another if that helps you.

I also put together an alternative audio alert to new mail in Mailwasher Pro. It's a double burst of klaxon, a pause, "You have new mail" in a computerised voice, a pause, then "New Mail" in Morse. That all repeats after a 10 second pause.
