Go to Start > Run, and type diskmgmt.msc

Select the partition and choose shrink

Leave at least 70GB for the first partution

Partition magic does that (at least the old version could). I do not know how well the newer versions work with Win7...yet.

Well, the first part of converting one partition into 2 is to shrink the original partition.
Step 2 would then be to create a partition in the "unpartitioned space"...what is left over after you did the "shrink" in step one (you should be able to create the partition in the Windows 7 Disc Manager) Administrative tools-> Computer Management -> Disc Manager

How much free space do you have on your hard disk now?

Check in Disk Management as mentioned previously.

In order to make another partition from Disk management you will need to shrink the first partition, it will allow less than the indicated free space, then add a partition to the un-allocated space.

You can't make a new partition out of disk space that is being used.

    DO NOT USE PARTITION MAGIC.

It is not compatible with the new Vista/7 partitioning rules - I believe they have no plans to update - it has been left to wither and die.

Disk Management is sufficient for what you want to do at this time.

There's also a new one out there that is supposed to be like Gparted but more powerful.

    It;s called Parted Magic,

    You can download It here:

Gparted and the like can be useful.

However, for those using Windows only - the best free partitioner is Partition Wizard - installer and boot disc.

( FAT and NTFS supported - so windows users only)

32 and 64 bit. lots of functions, including the best partition undelete/recovery I have come across as well as convert Logical >Primary and vice versa without data loss.

    Free Download Partition Wizard
