Save/Open dialog missing text and buttons

Recently save dialogs in several programs including multiple browsers and native windows software like Word have stopped displaying file names and the buttons have disappeared.

See example on Opera: Frustrating lack of file names and buttons - Album on Imgur
And slightly different behavior in Word: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

I have looked around for an obvious answer but nothing quite seems to fit the bill. This is really infuriating... please help!

Boot from the win 7 installation disk, go to Repair and launch a cmd window.
    Type
    chkdsk C: /f

    Pay attention on the results.
If no bad blocks or bad clusters
    type
    sfc /scannow

I have a client with the same issue on her Win7 machine, but I can't find anything else online about this issue - it apparently started for her sometime between Friday and today. SFC scan didn't find any issues, and haven't had the chance to run chkdsk yet, although might just try a system restore. Did you happen to figure out what was causing it or a solution to it? Thanks!

I did a system restore and that solved it for my client, and then it re-occurred again shortly thereafter. Tracked it down to Avast Business Anti-Virus and uninstalling that seems to have resolved it. Filed a support ticket with Avast.

I have suffered the same irritating problem this past week. Fortunately for me a friend directed me to a piece of Anti-Malware software called Malwarebytes. I have just run the software, rebooted and the problem has vanished! Time will tell whether the little blighter will reinfect the PC again but for now I'm rather relieved!

    Worth a try folks!
