Windows.old File
I was wondering if any of you deleted that file. It takes up alot of space. == Also how long have you got the Sleep Mode set for. It is kind of a bother.

Hello Bigmck,
The Windows.old folder is nothing more than a copy of the your previous installation. If you do not need to copy anything back from it, then there's very little reason to keep it if your current installation is running fine. I would recommend to delete the Windows.old folder to gain the hard drive space back.
I have my sleep mode set to 30 minutes of idle time before the computer goes to sleep, and 10 minutes for the monitors.

Keep the windows.old file until you are sure there is nothing that you want. If you made backup, before the install, you can delete it now. How long before you go into sleep mode is subjective, what makes you happy. I have a desktop, my preference is probalby different from those with laptops. I have my monitor go off after 15 minutes and my harddrive shuts down after 30. I see no need for window savers.

There is actually point in keeping it if you want to transfer your old emails or program settings which are kept in the copied appdata folder. It also copies all the old programs that were installed on the previous version of windows. Sometimes data might be installed in the program's own folder.

I'd never leave my personal data on the same partition as Windows, it's just too prone to loss and corruption, as many years of using Windows has poignantly taught me.
The Windows.old file has no worth to me whatsoever.
I'd hope people loading Windows 7 are not relying on that folder as a sole means of recuperating any important data.

I agree with you there. All my data is off c:, but there are people who even use the desktop to save items to...

Hi all,
First post here so apolagies for any mistakes I make. Regarding this windows.old folder - Is it definitely safe to delete it? Thing is, I had vista prior to 7 and the laptop came with acers own software and although it is a nice change to not have it anymore I'm a little worried that I may need it.
Can someone confirm I don't need it? I do seem to be getting on pretty well without it all..
On the off chance I do need/want something from there, like a particular program for instance, is it as simple as copying and pasting from the old folder into the new area? Or is this incorrect?

Why don`t you just move the whole thing to an external disk.
