After some research, I started Firefox in Safe Mode, disabled hardware acceleration, and problem solved. Hope it stays that way!

Well, problem with drop-down menus kept recurring, no matter what browser I used. So I downloaded another graphics driver from Dell that was identified for my system (R285472) and the problem is solved (for now).

Things are going well, so I will mark this solved. Hard to believe how far I have come and how much I have learned in a few weeks. The mere idea of replacing the hard drive was overwhelming to me, but it has worked out, and I am better off. Thank you especially to SIWI2 (and to Megahertz) for your very impressive knowledge, and just as much for your patience and willingness to help. All the best... Diana
