Booting to regular Windows resulted only in a blue screen. So I shut down, used F12 to enter the Diagnostics screen and ran that. Everything passed, except for Error Code 2000-0142, self-test unsuccessful, Status 79." I know all that means hard drive failure. From what I'm reading, about all I can do now is try to reseat the HD, in case there's a bad connection. Don't have a lot of faith I could do that correctly.

It is probably safest for you to replace the Hard Drive.
You could consider an SSD which is faster than a spinner, but more expensive.
There should be a factory.wim on the recovery partition. If you can copy that somewhere, you can install onto the new HD/SSD from that.

You can extract the windlg.exe file from this zip onto your usb drive. Boot up the OS, and run the windlg.exe. It will test your HD.

Thanks---ran chkdsk again and this time it did new things...deleted corrupt files and inserted attributes. But still ended up with 240 KB bad sectors, and blue screen when I tried to boot normally. Tomorrow I will try to test the HD with the file you linked to, soon as I get some time. Merci...

Your disk is dying. You must replace your HDD. As SiW suggested, buy a SSD.

So far so good.
factory.wim is a disk image to restore the computer as it came from Dell. If you can copy factory.wim on the recovery partition to an external disk then you can easily apply it to the new disk (thanks to SIW marvelous tools)

I did the WinDig test...HD failed the quick test. If I go ahead with getting a new HD, could I easily install it? And how can I ensure it's compatible? Also, how long will Microsoft update Windows 7? Of course I would rather not have to buy a new computer, but if I'm just facing more problems, perhaps it's time...?

It isn't difficult to put an HD into a laptop usually.
2.5" drives are made for laptops. $45 for a wd blue 500gb spinner.

If you want an ssd they are faster, lighter, use less battery power and cost a bit more. You might find it makes quite a difference to your lappy.

Win7 will continue to receive updates till 2020.
