Windows 7 Build 7601 release. Not updated or not legit?

I'm troubleshooting an issue for somebody (member of a forum) that still runs a Windows 7 (Build 7601) release. It clearly states that his Windows 7 a not activated (anymore). Can someone give me some directions please.

    1. I've read that this might be a very outdated release of Windows 7 with no more security and/or other service updates, or is it just not a legit copy?

    2. What IS the latest build for Windows 7?

Thanks in advance for any help and/or directions to a topic with some more information about this and/or latest build of Windows 7.

    Cheers

Windows 7 is supported until January 2020. There is no 'very outdated' release that would be identified as illegitimate and turn off activation It's probably not a legit copy that was never activated to begin with. But who knows.

Where did this version of Windows 7 come from? If the person you are trying to help has a legit product key, it should work in activating Windows. If it is legit, and it doesn't work, he needs to contact MS.

Latest version of Win7 is 7601, SP 1.

Windows 7 SP1 is build 7601 and Windows 7 No SP is build 7600 these are the current builds. Whats the make and model of the system? Is there a windows 7 product key on the system? If so you can activate Windows with that key.

    Hi Maverick,

    first thing to do
    run the validation tool
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012

Once its run depending on whether or not SP1 is installed
    line 10 in the report
    Windows OS version: 6.1.7601. = SP1 installed
(latest build is not the same as W10, its either W7 or W7 SP1 ONLY)

    Further down, in the report
A not registered OS will show these lines

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watadminsvc.exe[Hr = 0x80070003]
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\npwatweb.dll[Hr = 0x80070003]
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watux.exe[Hr = 0x80070003]
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watweb.dll[Hr = 0x80070003]

The standard fix for SP1 is to install KB971033

post the results i'll be able to tell you more
Would be handy to know if its OEM or retail

WOW! Thanks a lot for your support and additional info's here, much appreciated!

In my response to the aforementioned forum member, I've urged the member to first! sort out the activation issue - update, buy the license or whatever is needed - before I can reach out and start helping. Because I'm just a fellow forum member, I feel no obligation to help without the confirmation that things are in order.

What's the consensus here about my initial response?

    Cheers

    Hi Maverick,

Tell them to run,copy/paste, the validation tool i mentioned and linked.
Its the genuine MS check tool, no private data in it and NO need to amend it.

    We can go from there.
