file listings in Windows 7
When I open a folder I want to see files first, ahead of subfolders. Surely there is a simple way to fix this but I haven't been able to find one.
Thank you for any help.

Why do you have a lot of sub folders within a main folder. If you don't have any sub folders within a folder then the files will be the only things listed.
In details view you can click on the name column or in other views you can select descending sort from the view menu. This will produce a listing in reverse alphabetical order with files shown first. I don't believe there is any other way. Most people, including myself, have a preference for folders listed first. Third party file managers may have an option for otherwise showing files first but I don't know of any that do.
Here are some alternatives to Windows File Explorer:

Likely you'll find that one of these will let you sort and view your files the way you want to.
What I mean is, say you have a Folder called Business Maintenance listed in My Documents, then every document that you have saved in that folder will be be shown as a file, individually listed with the name that you have saved it as. This list would normally be saved in alphabetical order. What you mean that if there is only one subfile in a master folder, there will be a list of files , isn't it ?
Is that a clear enough explanation for you?.
