Files not displaying in folder in Window 7 64-bit

I have a problem with files not displaying in folder in Window 7 64-bit.
I open a folder and files and subfolders are displayed but some files don't appear.
Only after I use the search box can I find the files I want. Otherwise I can't see them.

Any direction on this would be greatly appreciated.

What sort of files are they that do not appear in the list? Are they by chance "System" files?

Linux Mint 18.2 xfce 64-bit (VMWare host) / Windows 8.1 Pro 32-bit (VMWare guest)

Are they "hidden" files? If the files have been set to "hidden", then you can't see them, unless you tell File Explorer to show ALL files.
