    Icons are all jumbled up

I've just install Win 7 after getting a bug and failing to find out where it was located. Any way everything is running OK accept for the desktop icons.

I've got 9 and I set them up for convenience more than anything else, but every time I start the computer their still in a line at the left of the screen and all set at medium, but all are jumbled up even though I've set them up using the "auto arrange" and "align icons to grid"

Yet on my Asus laptop (running windows 10) they are the same each time I log in.

Can anyone shed some light on this strange problem.

    Thanks a lot.

Turn off Auto Arrange. If that is on, Windows will take its liberty with your icons.

Even with Auto Arrange off, Windows will still do its own auto arranging to an extent, just not as much.

Have you ever showed a stack of pictures to a friend, and your friend rearranged them? Windows is that friend, who thinks he knows better than you how the icons should be arranged.

    Thanks for the info

Its not that a big deal, but I get up early in the morning (I'm an affiliate marketer, early bird and all that) and just carry on where I left off the night before and when everything is totally in a shambles I remember that the desktop icons are in the wrong place.

Its irritating to say the least.

Then that's the only way round it, just turn of auto arrange.

You'd think High & Mighty Microsoft would leave other peoples setups alone. Just meddling to remind us who's in control.

Any way thanks a lot Jim.

    Hi Fabian,
I have my desktop icons setting: Align Icons to Grid, and Show Desktop Icons. Most always they remain where I placed them. Sometimes when win update does a major update, some are moved but that rarely happens. Additionally, if you single left click an icon to highlight it, then hold down the Ctrl key, you can scroll the mouse button to resize the desktop icons to any size you wish. It overrides the default small, medium, & large choices. Happy Computing!

I have three monitors at my job. My icons are on monitors 1 and 2. The icons on monitor 2 often rearrange themselves, perhaps two or three times a week.

On the other hand, the icons never rearrange themselves on my Linux Mint computer (at home).

If this really bothers you, then you might consider switching to Linux Mint.

If you need Windows for some things, you can install VMWare Workstation Player in Mint, and then install Windows in a virtual machine. In that way, you will have Windows if you ever need it.

I use a little program called Desktop Restore. You set the arrangement you want, and can restore it any time the icons stray.
