Windows 7: Seeing SID instead of username in mapped drive perm's. How can I fix?

Seeing SID instead of username in mapped drive perm's. How can I fix?

I started by looking to see why my network drive shows a big red X when looking at Computer > Network Location and seeing the status of my mapped drives. But the drives can be accessed just fine. Then I looked at permissions and ...

Where I would expect user names, I see SID's instead! Very unexpected. Help!?

are you looking at the SID's of the host machine from a guest machine? if so thats pretty normal, your machine can only name SID's in its local directory

Here is a side-by-side with new mapping from the same server.
You can see the "fresh" mapping shows names just fine, but the stale mapping shows SIDs.

I had a mapped network drive, removed it, and now that drive letter is no longer available to map, AS IF it was in use already, but cannot be seen anywhere. In this case, my drive letter is P: (). The COMPUTER shows the mapped drive as disconnected. A right click on the drive and selecting Disconnect results in "This network connection does not exist." Agreed, a NET USE shows the drive is not in use.

Using DiskMgmt.msc (Disk Management) neither shows the P: drive in use, NOR will allow me to assign the drive letter. It's not in the list of available drive letters.

The registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Network does not show P in the list of networked drives (though other drives show up properly.)

So, I can infer that the COMPUTER map with the big red X is indeed "using" the drive letter, though I cannot disconnect it.

From the command prompt:
net use P: /delete
returns "the network connection could not be found. .... 2250
Some research suggested I SHOULD be able to just map it again, so following with
net use P: \\myserver\mydrive
unfortunately results in system error 85 (drive name in use.)
As noted earlier, a simple:
net use
does NOT show the drive in use.

Sidebar: found some suggestions about netbios and checked my PC (seems OK)
verified that netbios is working with
net view \\myserver
net view \\ipofmyserver
both of which resolve and return values correctly.

How can I get my drive disconnected and put back in use?

Further investigation suggests something is "broken" (duh) and that the COMPUTER map (computer > map network drive) is not connected, but also, won't disconnect. So the SID problem is an artifact of the drive mapping problem.

Having said that, my problem is that Computer > drive (right-click) > disconnect yields a "This network connection does not exist." but won't drop the mapping!!!

Resolved - got the drives successfully unmapped (had to clear the entries in the registry!) and now all is well again.

Mapped drive & USB drive letter conflict
I just built a new computer for work. Our server is mapped as letter “F” and this works unless I leave a USB card reader plugged in when I shut it down. On boot up one of the drives on the card reader gets assigned “F” and the mapped drive doesn’t work. I then have to remove the card reader and...
