I have been wondering if it is possible in win7or10 to have an icon on the desktop that, when clicked, immediately starts a screen saver. Then, when one comes back a press on a certain key restores the screen. I have looked through the windows cmd reference but could't find any help there.
Anyone have any ideas?

The standard screensaver in Windows used to be files stored on the system drive with an .SCR extension, I cannot find them in Windows 10 but they were in Windows 7 - Creating a standard shortcut to one of these files would give you a switch on for that screensaver and one displayed it would be ended by moving or clicking the mouse or tapping any key, You can right click on SCR files and set their parameters - Best I can suggest
The best form of screensaver is a blank screen and you can set this to occur in the basic Power Plan Controls blank screen after x minutes which will automatically blank the screen when the system is not used for a set time
You can also set a screensaver or screen blank to require a user to enter a password
If your keyboard has a Sleep key you can use the power plan settings to have the sleep key turn off the screen

Thanks for the quick and informative reply! I found the (scr) files in my win7 machine. They were under the \windows\ folder. One I found is titled "scrnsave.scr" and when called produces a Black, barren, screen. Just what I have been looking for. So, the machine I need to fix is my wife's win10 HP 'all in one' desktop. I put the 'scrnsave.scr' on a thumb drive and took it over there. Before I copied it onto the win10 I searched for *.scr in the \windows folder and sure enough there they were. I put the 'scrnsave.scr' on her desktop and set up a sequence for her. I use single click for activation but she uses double click. So I told her to single click on the screensaver icon to highlight it, then turn off the mouse and hit enter. Bingo, blank screen. Of course she then has to set a pan over the keyboard because a single key press will bring back the screen. And then the CAT can't get at it.
I thank you again for getting me started towards a fix to counter a four legged monster that gets into everything.

I did this years ago, create a shortcut & move/copy it to desktop, changed icon to an exploding bomb, set "F9" as keyboard shortcut, set to 'ignore mouse moves, all this to:
