    Anak,

Thank you again for your detailed response. BTW, my indexing was not working again this morning (1/31/18). It worked fine yesterday (1/30/18) I ran the event finder and there were over 25,000 entries. I didn't go all the way to the end, but I did find a few red and yellow warnings. None on 1/30/18 except for referring to a new program (Audacity/sound editor) I used and the indexing problem started way before I ever had that program.

On 1/28/18, there was a (yellow) warning: "The windows search service is starting up and attempting to remove the old search index. Reason: Used Requested" Event ID: 1008
Maybe this was when I did a rebuild of the index? Not sure what date I last did the rebuild.

    Details:

Does any of this tell you anything? Should I keep going with the event viewer? Again, thank you very, very much for your help.

    You're welcome Linda,

No you don't have to go any deeper, the ones you have posted, (thanks,) will keep me busy for awhile, but until we get this solved go back to eventviewer when search fails and post if you see any that are different.

The one entry that grabs my attention is TOASTER.EXE it is part of a Dell program called Dell Datasafe Local Backup and Recovery and is controlled by the SoftThinks Agent since Dell decided to create an affiliate soft thinks and toaster has been causing problems.

    • Do you have a dedicated third-party backup procedure or do you let Dell and soft-thinks handle it?

What this boils down to is a test; Go back to Services and turn off the STAS (SoftThinks Agent Service) by changing the Startup type for this service from Automatic (Delayed Start) to Manual. To reach the properties window for it just double-click on it or right-click then properties >About half way down the window where it says Startup Type click on the down arrow to the right and select manual.

Since you have probably taken the initiative and started rebuilding your index go ahead and set the STAS after the rebuilding, I'm not sure if it would make a difference if the change to manual was made before or after the rebuilding. If this new rebuild does fail go back to the STAS and check if there was any change in the service startup if there wasn't, change the setting to disable, then rebuild, use your machine as usual and wait.

How are you with working in the registry?

Yea, I enjoy doing them when I'm unsure of the experience of who I'm trying to help especially if there's no tutorials.

Here's one that lindalo might use for a refresher on windows search: Windows Search - Configure and Use Don't forget to check the external resources and related tutorials at the bottom of Dzomlija's tutorial.

I have a Seagate Backup Plus Drive but it is almost full and needs to be replaced. When I go into the Dell backup program, they want me to purchase an upgrade before it will do any more backup. Guess I need to decide which way to go on that.

Sorry, I have no experience working with the registry.

Thanks for this link! I narrowed my search parameters so that when I have to rebuild the index, at least it shouldn't take as long. Sorry if I bombarded you with TMI! But I do appreciate your help! :):
Wish I could send you some cinnamon rolls or a pie!

You could delete some of the older backups but you mentioned you need a replacement so it sounds like you want to save those and deletion is out, looks like you'll be getting a new one.

Working with the registry is not hard you just have to be careful with selecting the keys you need to adjust.

Are you using the new index with STAS on manual?

Yes, I changed it to manual. Indexing is working today, so . . . we shall see!

    Thanks again!
