If you correctly burned the ISO to DVD or USB and it won't boot, you're trying to boot a legacy version of Linux into UEFI or vise versa. Don't believe there is anything wrong with, at least the part your using, of your computer. Some versions of Linux won't boot from external drive on my HP P7. Legacy uses MBR UEFI uses GPT

Hard Drive has nothing to do with booting to USB device, CD, or DVD. You can boot to one of those without a Hard Drive or Solid State Drive installed! When you start your computer the BIOS (basic input output system) goes through a series of checks including boot sequence, if CD/DVD is first in line, it tries to boot from the CD/DVD, if it is bootable, it will run the startup.exe and the programs load into RAM (random access memory). If you notice when speaking about ISO images as live, i.e. bootable images, provided you burn, not copy, them to media.

What are your ultimately attempting to accomplish?

Are both your pc's 1 & 2 running the same version of windows?

Are both the Hard Drives the same size?

Do you have your 25 character windows product key for the broken PC? It should be on a sticker on the case.

Why don't you use simply take your working machine, image the hard drive, copy/transfer it to the non-working machine and change the key to match the sticker. End of problem!

Agreed. I was simply (I thot) installing the Gateway factory recovery disks. stuff like win updates was missing and other things. during the install ("services" disk, 1 of 5) the Hd got a format. Nothing in win7 worked then cos it was gone too. Alas, this big trouble emerged. I have a win7 pro disk but cannot install it. Guess that answers your basic question. Thanks Jim

Win 7 Pro disk has all the versions on it (x32s or x64s not both). You can modify the ei.cfg, either by renaming the file, deleting it, or altering the line that contains "Professional". It then becomes an AIO disk. When you run the disk instead of just PRO version all versions are now accessible. You cannot install and activate a version other than that which is supported by your product key and you cannot swap between the same version 32 and 64 bit editions. It will load, boot, etc, but windows genuine activation will never take place and you will be barred from updates 30 days later unless you use slmgr rearm, which only works 2-3 times.

What do you wish to do? I've provided a couple different options & regardless of your options choice, you will ultimately be able to boot your now unbootable pc to Win7 HPx64

LiL foreign to me, but got a general idea. So it does say "Windows 7 Professional" 32-bit software; "X15-60528-01" for what that is worth. Uh, think that product key comes with a paid version doesn't it. I bought that dvd from eBay in 2012-13.

X15-60528-01 is Win 7 x32pro retail pre SP1, you don't want 32 bit OS this day and age. What do you think of disk image of working machine restore from that image to non-working machine. Even if the two drives are not the same size I can make it work, provided the origin drive is not huge and almost full, and the destination drive is smaller in total size than the data to be copied to it. I believe, bases on what you've posted so far, that may be your simplest choice.

Do you have an external hard drive or USB with enough capacity to store a system image temporarily? Capacity only has to be a few megs greater than the actual size of data on the origin drive. You will end up with a BOOTING/WORKING reimaged machine with exactly the same data, programs, etc.

Ok, so that win-pro disk is out. You know better than I about that, for sure.

A disk image of working machine sounds intriguing. I asked someone about that but got diverted. PC1 is sick puppy. PC2 is vim & vigor. PC2 says “Local Disc (C) has 47.7GB free of 220GB with 1.60 GB from the old useless iso file. I can likely free up more if needed then reinstall later. Yes, do have a free usb with 14.4 GB. Using networx from Major Geeks the data usage seems to be a max 8.28 MB per hour. Could not see a prog to view solely drive data size. I am pretty sure I got data mixed up somehow with HD capacity based on my Google search on that subject but the whats new.

All in all, I am game for what you suggest. And really do appreciate your offer to and actual help. Jim

If this is what you need cool, if not let me know. Jim
