"Item Not Found" error when creating files/folders

    Hi,

When I try to create a file in any USB Flash drive, I get the error: "Item Not Found" : "Could not find this item" : "This item is no longer located in <drive:\>. Verify the item's location and try again."

Clicking on Try Again does not help.

I found a similar issue people are facing with deleting/renaming folders. But I can delete/rename folders. I get the above error if I try to create a file or folder. To create file, I tried right-click, New Text Document but it always brings the above error. Pasting a file also gives the same error.

It seems this all started after I tried BitLocker which is currently set to Off on all drives.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

Appreciate your help in solving this.

    Thanks.

What kind of file you're tying to create?
Normally is a program that creates a file with the extension. What program you're using to create the file? Are you using the Save As under the program?

I tried to right-click in the folder and clicked on New -> Text Document. The error message appears without Notepad even opening up. Same error when trying New -> Folder. Copying any file from another place and pasting also gives the same error. I can rename existing files/folders. Can even delete them. But creating any file or folder with anything gives this error.

    Lets do some tests
    1) On explorer, right click om C: drive - Properties - Tools tab - Error check - Check now. As it is in use, schedule on next start.
Reboot. Pay attention on the results, specially bad clusters or bad blocks.

    2) Open a CMD window and type:
    sfc / scannow

The error does not occur on C: drive. It only occurs on USB Flash drives. The same USB drives work correctly on another PC. On this PC, using any USB drive results in the same error.

    Did you do the tests?
If there is a disk or corrupted system files it can make USB not work properly.

Ok, I did the tests. No errors.

sfc /scannow returned "Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Tried creating folders/files from the command line. Still the same:

Open disk manager, expand all columns so we can read them and, with the snipping toll, take a snapshot. Post it here as an attachment.

    It is formatted as exFat.
Do you use on a Mac computer.
Copy the data on it and format it to default (Fat32 or NTFS).
