RealVNC connection cut off by "Force restart" page

    Hi Everyone

Yesterday, I logged on to my work computer which is on Windows 7 from home using RealVNC and I attempted to restart it. When I did this, my RealVNC connection was permanantly cut off for the rest of the day. This morning, when I got into work, I turned on my monitor and I discovered that my work computer was on the page which lists programs that need to close and has two blue buttons at the bottom saying "Force restart" and "Cancel". Does anyone know if it is possible to change a setting on Windows 7 or RealVNC so that when this page appears, it does not cutoff the RealVNC connection so that I would be able to see this page from home and click on either of the two buttons?

    Thank you very much.

    Kind regards

    Tim

EDIT: I suspect that the computer gets disconnected from the network when "Force restart" page comes up. Is there a way to keep it connected when this page comes up?

Hi Tim, and welcome to the forums

I cannot give any direct help on RealVNC as I have not used it in many years but I can state that what you are trying to do is possible in at least one alternative remote access software system, Teamviewer, I use it all the time to reboot remote systems, from my desk or even my phone. Teamviewer is free for personal use but is a commercial package for business purposes.

If set-up as administrator user on both systems and an option checked, when the system goes into a reboot cycle it pops up a dialog asking if you wish to restore the connection when the partner system returns, it also allows log-in and sending Ctr-Alt-Del and other special sequences

Hopefully you will also find that RealVNC or some similar package has this facility, you can check Teamviewer out as a personal user at https://www.teamviewer.com/en/

    Hi Barman58

Thank you very much indeed for your welcome and your reply.

I have just tested Teamviewer and have found that the "Force restart" page can indeed be seen via Teamviewer. However, I would prefer not to use software which depends upon a centralised system. The advantage of VNC is that it is a direct connection between the two computers.

I have done some more investigating into this issue and have found that attempting to restart the computer generates the following message for the VNC service in the Event Viewer:

"You have been disconnected because the host computer has powered down."

Is there a way of making the VNC service blind to shutdown signals?

    Thank you very much.

    Kind regards

    Tim

As I said I do not know of any option in RealVNC, but that's due to my unfamiliarity with the software these days.

I can fully understand your reluctance to use an intermediary, 99% of my use is on internal LAN networks or Assisting home/small business clients - There is a VPN available for Teamviewer that can give better privacy, have not used it as I have another VPN to use if required

I suggest you leave this thread open as someone from the US may have something to add as they come online

    Hi Nigel

    Thank you very much.

I will wait to see what the forum members on the other side of the Atlantic say.

    Kind regards
