Thanks for this. You have given me some hope now. I was afraid they changed something in the driver interface for some security reason. But indeed that would have required new drivers for everyone. Your diagnosis make good sense.

I did exactly what you mentioned. I installed the KB4284842 preview. Unfortunately, it does not fix the problem. The crashes are perhaps a little less frequent, but I cannot say that with much confidence. Not enough time to observe. I uninstalled this preview rollup now.

If after 6 months there is still no better fix for what is probably a known issue, what to expect ?

BTW, maybe this question will sound odd for you but anyhow I wanna make it clear - do you have M$ Office 2003 in full or partly installed on this your win7x86 with dwm.exe issues?

    Pls prompt.

    Thanks.

This may also sound odd to you. The answer is NO, I do not have Office 2003 installed, BUT I do have Office XP (2002) installed. I bought is as a complete package at that time with many additions. Was very $$$$. But it is still today enough for what I need and I learned how to use it, well mostly that is. In time I added the Compatibility Pack for Office 2007, which gives me the new document formats.

I would very much like to keep my current system and software for as long as it is possible. At that time it was a very significant purchase and I take great care in keeping my installation as clean as possible.

OK, I got it. Pls check dwm.exe process size in Windows Task Manger while opening by your Excel2002 any few of your Excel files one by one. It's likely that doing this will increase size of dwm.exe process in abnormal way - it's like a jump up and possible process memory leakage - but pls don't expect that jump on every Excel file opening when it seems to be an irregular but stacking abnormality. Pls as usual prompt results.

Also pls be noted that this abnormality of an old Office2003Pro in my case is also present on win7 Dec2017Rollup state but naturally doesn't result into dwm.exe crash-restart, while Office2007 seems to be free of this abnormality. So I'm just checking if an old OfficeXP-2002-2003 could be the 2nd indirect culprit of these dwm.exe issues under discussion beyond the 1st main culprit as wrong memory (+heap) management.

BTW, do you use Dell laptop?

    p.s.
I would very much like to keep my current system and software for as long as it is possible. ... and I take... care in keeping my installation as clean as possible.
That's exactly what I do but concerning m$ products only.

Indeed an interesting observation. I started Task Manager. The DWM process show size of 10,920 K. Then started Excel 2002 and opened about 10 spreadsheets. Not so large, but still. The DWM process grows with each opened spreadsheet. In the end it is 12,096 K. I the closed each spreadsheet 1 by 1 and looked at the mem size. No change ! After excel itself was closed the total size was 12,100 K. Continue running, the process increases sometimes by 4 bytes.

Now I must say that I am not always opening Office 2002 documents. I also had DWM crashes even without having any Office progam or dll loaded. But then again I don't see why DWM should increase unless it is a leak.

No I don't have a Dell laptop. It is an Acer that I started to use as a desktop replacement. I don't have any desktop machine anymore since my work space is limited.

    OK. Thanks.

    1. I assume your dwm.exe process behavior while using Excel2002 as normal. Basically here the abnormality is dwm.exe process size stacking. I mean that normal behavior is when you open Excel file = dwm.exe process size increased, when you close Excel file = dwm.exe process size decreased, and abnormality, which looks like a memory leak, is when the increased size of dwm.exe doesn't slide down after Excel is closed.

    2. Yep, sure. The issues occur even if there is no actual use of Office, although it could be some hidden interaction in-between Office & win7 like for instance MDM.EXE process that is always alive being surely the part of Office but not win7 itself.

    3. OK, I just confirmed that in your case it's not Dell laptop.

I understand, but perhaps I was not clear. To me the Excel behavior did NOT look normal because the size increased when opening files, but did NOT decrease when closing these files and even closing Excel itself. Even after running more than 2 hours, the size never decreased. Instead it keeps increasing (slowly) !

Yep, as I said it could be an indirect culprit but surely not main one, although your 1-2MB increase on win7x86 is nothing, when use of Excel2007 on Desktop PC with 4GB NVidia videocard also returns dwm.exe process size increase of some 1-2MB and never decreasing. Forget.

I have a plenty of mobile hardware around including both old & newest, as well as 1 pretty old desktop, to perform some testing but the only thing I don't have is win7x86 when all OSes around are x64. However, now I don't consider reasonable to remove Office2003 just for testing purpose.

Anyhow pls hold on so far on the last known good & stable Dec2017Rollup, and I'll duly post any worth to mention info here.

    C ya,

May I confirm the current value of this registry key of your Acer laptop win7x86:

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache

default is 0 but many users set it to 1.

Also pls prompt your GPU model name & its hardware ID.

    Thanks.

I actually have 2 models. Both have the same problem.

The registry value for LargeSystemCache is 0 in both cases (default value, never changed). The memory installed is 4GB, but used is only 3 GB. The BIOS maps the upper 1 GB to above the 4GB limit.

    The GPU's are:
    NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT; PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0407&SUBSYS_011E1025&REV_A1

    NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS; PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0427&SUBSYS_011E1025&REV_A1

Since some time now I also have occasional crashes of the NVidia driver. The driver restarts automatically and nothing else is affected, well mostly. Sometimes, but not always I saw a message about insufficient graphics memory. However, I cannot reproduce that. It happened 1 time that the system froze completely just after the driver crash. Only solution, hard power off/on.

The driver is the latest available, version 21.21.13.4201, date 14-11-16 in dev manager, 342.01 in NVidia listing.

The 8600 model has 512 MB of memory, the 8400 has 256 MB. I am not a very heavy graphics user. No games, for example. Just simple office apps, internet and mail.

Let me know, please if I can assist in any way. Thanks for your help !
