What other shutdown settings have you changed? You may want to change your shutdown settings back to their default settings in order to trouble shoot.

Just my opinion, but I would hope that a laptop isn't continually "on"!

I'd suspect a conflict with a power management driver or possibly a hotkey utilisation program the notebook manufacturer has written, and Windows 7.

However since you're not running the retail version there's not a great deal of reason in reinstalling it to troubleshoot the problem - can't you lay hands on a full release version to test it in a stabler environment?

I would revert to your original power settings. Much like Jacee's screen shot, your laptop should shut down when you hit the power button, when you select shutdown from the start menu or when you close the laptop. You may have inadvertently done something that has disabled shutdown. Let us know if that makes a difference.

Ive disabled hibernate a while back thinking that was the problem but it persisted i made the power button to shut down the computer and the start menu to shutdown as well. the laptop doesn't stay on all the time i have to do hard shutdown to shut it off. i jnow that is bad but i have no other option until i get this issue solved.

also forgot to mention the desktop doesn't always automatic refresh its self
    Hi Joe

I suspect they are two different problems. Lets start with the shutoff. can you type cmd in search>powercfg -H enter
    see what value it returns

    Re refresh:
Look in event viewer (type eventvwr in search) go to the windows logs>application tab. Look for errors (red in left hand column) that have app hang, app crash, etc. Around the time of the hangs. Let us know what the event ID and srouce codes are

    Thanks
